These 2 types of wood are supposed to be hickory. The one on the right is for sure hickory - I cut it down & it was easily identified by leaf structure & nuts. The stuff on the left was already down and moved from where it was cut so nothing but bark to identify it, but was told it was hickory by the tree service people that cut it. It was free, so I took it but then noticed the different bark.

If wrong forum, where should I post?

The outdoors board is the best place to have your wood identified. If you tried the general board you'd have a bunch of answers along the line of where you might've thought this one was going.

What are you doing with it? Firewood, BBQ, gun stocks, wood working...?

Saw it and smell it. Use your known hickory as a control.

The hickory trees on my property have bark like the pieces on the left. None of mine are over 10-12" in trunk diameter.
It has been my go-to BBQ wood for 15+ years.

There are different types of hickory, just like oaks, pines, etc. A difference in bark color and texture wouldn't be surprising.

Can you show the end grain? Put some water on it to make the grain stand out.

There's nothing like a nice piece of hickory.

The bark looks like red oak. Look at the end grain, and if there are rays radiating out from the center, its oak.

Using it for smoking. I'll get a shot of the end grain after the game today.

Thanks for the replies.

Smooth bark on the left looks like water oak to me.

Your first pic shows the rays running from the center out to the edge... that's an oak.

Also interesting is you can see two centers in that pic. That tree was forked where it was cut until the radial growth eventually "hid" the fork into one stem. From an observer on the ground, the fork would have appeared to move higher over time.
