Wow, just saw this

As more of a lurker inn texags, I didn't even realize he was NW80 until last year!

I don't know who NW80 was fishing with, but does anyone know how that person(s) is doing? Sometimes the people still with us get lost in the haze that happens after someone we care about passes away. Being around an untimely death affects people differently.

Never met the man but I can tell he must have cut a hell of a wide swath by reading this thread. RIP Sir.

There is a thread that I believe was started by his sister with his email list in his phone. Lot's of ones similar to things posted on here.

I like this one and have copied the main portion of the posting. He captured NW80....

"the esteemed and incomparable Dr. Neel Ware...or I as nicknamed him years ago Neely McFeeley.

Like everyone else privileged to have him as a friend, Neel taught me how to fly fish and shared the best virtues of true brotherhood.

He was a giant of manhood - physically powerful in stature and often profanely vociferous in his unbridled opinions about any and all topics. He was tender, gentle and a caregiver in every sense of the soft-spoken word.

Though I never met many of you on this mailing list, I share the communal sense of disbelief, grief and profound loss of our friend

I know Neel is in a divine place with a heavenly trout stream. Satin wouldn't have taken him for fear of having to listen to his eternal grumbling and grousing , whereas the Good Lord undoubtedly wanted fly-fishing lessons from the very best."

Damn going out in style.

Neil wanted to be cremated and his ashes loaded into shotgun shells and shot at this evening event. They found some to do it and folks are firing off shells right now.

Just when you think NW80's legacy couldn't get any better, he goes and has his ashes shotgunned.

So, Steve posted a bit of what I was taking about in another group.

I went to the memorial for Neel last night out at Schwertner Ranch, where Neel spent LOTS of time hunting, fishing, running cows, hanging out with friends and family, etc. it was amazing. There were well over 100 people out there. Lots of stories told, most funny, a couple of serious ones, but all Neel....including one where he told a friend's wife the way to get rid of his nightly indigestion was giving him a blowjob to make him "forget about the pain of indigestion".

As Bott mentioned, one of the highlights of the evening is that Neel wanted to be Neel, wanted to be cremated, put into shotgun shells and fired off. They found a place in Alabama called Holy Smoke that would do it....with it being 9-11 they had red, white and blue smoked shells. They had 6 friends shoot...2 with each color....three times. Then had his niece shoot 3 to make it 21.

They also announced tonight that there are three different things that have been set up set up. A $25,000 endowment for trauma "stuff" at seton. An endowment scholarship for EMTs doing trauma training. And an Aggie Foundation medical scholarship.

It was a wonderful tribute to Neel, and I am so glad I got to be a part of it, and a part of Neels life, even for a bit. The worlds is a little quieter, not as funny, not as interesting without him in it.

And as soon as I can get to a desktop, or to a website to do it, I will post a few pics from last night.

OH!!! One more thing. They also announced last night that there are three different things that have been set up. A $25,000 endowment for trauma "stuff" at seton. An endowment scholarship for EMTs doing trauma training. And an Aggie Foundation medical scholarship. They had info on the Aggie Foundation one there and contact info for the person at Deton for the other two.

I made it to the funeral in FW.

Still miss getting those random late night, early morning phone calls. Last week I had a pretty major scare with my wife having a pulmonary embolism, and had Neel in the back of my mind.

I hope it was merely a scare.

I got a lot of those real early morning idle ER time phone calls.I talked but mostly listened. I never realized he did the same with so many other people.

I can't tell you how many times he'd call and I'd have my boys in the truck with me and I'd have to let him know he was on the speaker so my boys didn't hear from him words they probably shouldn't despite their mother and I not being too careful ourselves.

It still bums me out my boys didn't get to meet him. He was all fired up about his place in Mansfield and kept telling me to bring my boys down once he got it finished.

He was one of a kind.

Just now seeing this thread after the bump, and I'm saddened to learn the news of Neel's passing. Sorry he never got to retire to his Mansfield "mansion" as he planned. We had a lot in common, and shared much of it on the phone or via PMs and texts, and like many of you, I enjoyed listening to him talk/rant. With Neel, you had to be a good listener, and ready to jump in for a word or two when he'd take a breath! Every conversation we had seemed to result from his reaction to a thread we were passionate about. He lived life with gusto, and touched many lives. I regret never getting to share a campfire with him or wet a line, but his memory will linger long here, and with me! He was the same with ALL of us. A true TexAgs Legend!

It was a scare, but one we apparently caught right on the cusp of being really bad. She spent she spent 4 days in the hospital, and has to take blood thinners for several months....But for the most part she is doing very well.

There is a lot of irony throughout the last year. Last year I was on a deer hunt somewhat associated with the outdoor board. I literally pulled the trigger on a deer, and my phone starts ringing. It was my sister, I literally answer and tell I just shot a deer I needed to check on. Barely discernable "ok". Two minutes later, my mom calls, "have you talked to your sister?" . Sort of. Since my connection sorta sucked, I had my wife call my sister. Couple minutes later, "Hey, your sister sounds like she just ran a marathon". So at this point I call Neel to get his perspective. "Sounds like she's having a f----- pulmonary embolism, tell her to get her ass to the ER NOW"..and hung up to add emphasis. Couple phone calls, and she's on the way to the hospital. In the parking lot of the Irving hospital, it took her 15 minutes to walk into the ER. Long story short, they flat out said had she not come in when she did, she might have made it only 1-2 more hours. Almost 2 hours to the second later, Neel calls to check on me and get a update (well, a bit tough since I'm near Houston). And he ended up calling about every other day. Mind you, he did the same when my dad was in the hospital. The night he passed I sent him a text on the way to the hospital saying they had gone into crisis mode. I was on the phone with Neel literally right up until I walked through the door, and ultimately had to make the final call.

So to say when the passing of Neel started coming out, and how he passed, I hit me pretty hard.

So last Tuesday, my wife started mentioning having trouble catching her breath all day. Especially any time she bent over, or changed positions. Then I remembered her complaining about her calf bothering her a couple days earlier.......oh crap, here we go again.

FYI....If you hit send before you type anything you can't edit.

Neel was a good guy but as BoerneGator said he could get riled up on some of the threads.

He was headed to hunt speed goats out west one evening. As I remember he had lost a patient and for some reason he was having a tough time dealing with it. He called and after a few minutes he got off on a thread. Without digging it up it might have been the "lens color thread." He had typed out a response.

"Doc, don't send that!" The next hour or so was filled with, "Neel! Do not post that! Damnit listen to me! For a smart guy you don't know diddly about lenses. If they call it vermilion....or brown...or amber or any thing that makes you think of brown there isn't a nickle's worth of difference.

I just hit send!

....and there it was and in short order it got a lot of response for a good while. He was embarrassed and took a sabbatical.........."sort of" for about six months. He still read everything and would call and talked about a thread and then say, "Hey, say so and so."

I'm thinking now that my good friend might have had multiple ghost writers.
