I was talking with Finn yesterday afternoon - I had absolutely no idea Neel played football for a spell at A&M. Apparently he played under Bellard for a short time and was promised a scholarship by Bellard. After a while (Finn's words, not mine - I'm assuming Neel gave him all of 24-48 hours max knowing him enough that I did) and no scholarship, Neel informed Bellard that he was quitting the team and concentrating on school to be a doctor.

Fast forward many, many years and Neel runs into Bellard at some benefit or banquet or somesuch. He walks up to Bellard and tells him that even though he quit playing ball, he managed to be successful in life and was a trauma surgeon, etc. Bellard apparently remembered him vividly (shocking, I know) and told him that sometimes his mistakes turn out to be the best for everybody in the long run because what Doc had accomplished in his life was significantly more than he ever would have accomplished on the football field.

I have no idea how many gunshot wounds he treated, but it was a hell of a lot. As mentioned, Neel was the surgeon on duty when Warden Justin Hurst was brought it. Needless to say there was little he could do. When you got to know Neel, that was one that you could tell that bugged him.

Other interesting thing that popped up that I actually never heard him talk about.....When Houston SWAT/FBI/Secret Service/DEA had special operations going on in the Houston area, Neel was the trauma surgeon that was held on standby. He worked a lot with training law enforcement special operations medics on their training.

Lighter note....heaven help you if he got to telling you about treating a gunshot wound when he was half lit. He was already pretty animated anyway. You were going to get poked pretty hard for every entry and exit wound, with a FULL explanation of the internal damage.....but he'd stop midstream about 10 second after a poke "hey, you might want to get that checked", and then right back to the story.

I'm not trying to restart the discussion on this thread and I know through the years other physicians have come along and challenged Neel on this point - but to your point ursus -

He would make the comment that he could tell which patients came in shot with a 9mm because they were amped up fighting, strapped to the gurney, with 2 policemen and an EMT trying to hold them down....

those shot w/ a .45 were 'F'n docile.'

His words.

For such a sad thing of losing a great man, I sure have enjoyed this thread.

I know this is random, but I couldn't help but think of his dog. Someone is taking care of him correct? If anyone is in touch with his family and they need any help with anything in the Austin area, please let me know.

He'd much rather us all be laughing and telling tales than crying in our bourbon.

His sisters have said the dog is being cared for.

He basically told me the same once.

Said he hated treating GSW patients who were shot with a 9mm. They had bowel repairs, chest tubes, drains and lines everywhere, and stayed in the ICU seemingly forever.

The ones shot with a 45 just died.

That was our biggest argument. Great memories debating dying in the ER vs. stopping the threat.

I know you built it because I told him your name etc as he was computer illiterate. Your call was buffered when it wasn't put together because he called me first.

I told him to get a ten year old in his neighborhood to do it.

Neel was a great friend....and a great supporter of Majesty Outdoors and mentoring kids. Now he gets to chase redfish and mulies 24/7 while watching me doing the same....except his view is way better than mine. He's a legendary outdoorsman who will be missed by everyone he touched.

I remember that. I was in on it. Kind of hard to argue with him at that point.

A year or so ago I posted asking if anyone knew of a fly casting instructor in the area. NW80 actually offered to work with me.
I was not familiar with his celebrity status on TexAgs at the time. I had no idea what I was in for. He invited me to his home one evening where he spent an hour or more teaching me to double haul cast and later cooked us some beautiful steaks.
I was privileged to hear some great stories and passionate rants as well as meet his dogs and see his plethora of fly rods and guns. He and I talked several times over the next few months.
His personality was as big as a west Texas sky.
Tight lines Doc........

RIP Doc. I loved talking guns with him, and am now kicking myself for not driving out to Georgetown to hang out last time he invited me.
