I haven't made this trip myself, but one of my buddies from work did and made this vid.

He's got another video showing him going up the river from Amistad, that I believe shows what you are talking about. The canyon walls get pretty high, looks like it would be a serious wind tunnel.Secolobo said:
Had to tow some guys to the high bridge with our boat once they got into the open river lake part. The wind blowing upstream through the canyon was hell on them.
