I've decided i want to get a 6.5 grendel. what kind of ammo are you using and what kind of optics?

thanks!

If you like a rapid expanding bullet, either one of the Hornady SST or ELD is the go to. Lots of good reviews online.

+1 for the Hornady ELD, and I run mine with a Riton 6-24x50

how do you like the scope? thats about the price point i'm wanting to be at for this set up. trying to be around 1000-1200 for everything.

I like the Federal Fusion load for hunting. Taken several whitetail so far with excellent penetration, massive organ damage, and large exit wounds.

For some reason my Alexander Arms barrel does not like Hornady loads. Based on my rifle and a couple of friends, a barrel either loves or hates Hornady loads.

I like it a lot. The magnification is probably overkill but it's great glass for the price

$1200 for a grendel and scope and mount? You're going to be going low end on the grendel there, just fyi.

Texags price on the Riton is $450... plus a mount is going to be about $90.. So $1200 - 560 puts you at $640 for the gun. Even building yourself, a decent barrel is going to run you $200 plus a BCG will be about $140 so now you're looking at $300 for upper/lower/handguard/LPK/Gas system/stock/buffer kit.... You're going to be making some sacrifices to get there.

Hornady SSTs (both 123s and the 129s). Killed a few deer with Nosler 120s from Alexander Arms, but stopped using them because the Hornady factory ammo with SSTs is more accurate in my rifle.

Optics-wise I'd go with that Bushnell scope from Cameraland that was discussed a few days ago for $749. I have one of the LRHS 3-12x44s on my Grendel and I can't say enough good things about it.

Personally, I think topping out at 12x for magnification on a Grendel is enough. Your effective range is 400 yards for hunting purposes and it helps keep your rig lighter in weight.

What do you think about the CZ 527 MTR? That's my rifle of choice as of right now. Got a buddy who's a rep for them. I'm thinking bolt gun first before adding another AR to the family

Thank ya sir. I was thinking 12x as well as all my shots are inside 250

If you're going bolt, they are awesome. I have one in store that I need to get back to CZ to get restocked, it came in... broken.

Cool, what I've read said the same thing. If I end up liking the cartridge I'll holler at ya to do a nicer AR build

You will either love this suggestion or hate it but I built a 6.5 grendel about a year and a half ago using the LaRue ultimate upper kit. Overall it is a very nice setup for $792 (you only need a lower receiver to complete the kit). I topped it off with the nikon black X1000 (6-24X50). I use the Hornady black ELD and have been very pleased with it.

I put an ATN X-Sight 4K on my 6.5g thinking I wanted something more than 5.56 but less than 308.

I used a BoBro Mount through NightVision Outfitters to mount it. Mount is rock solid.

Haven't used it yet.

Love it as it's a great all around cartridge but you never stated what purpose you wanted it for so...

Have one 24" barrel for long range target using AA Lapua 123 sporting a Nikon 6x24 target scope. I built a 18" hunting rig for my daughter and another for me. Taken deer and hogs using 123 SST. Also used Wolf 120 MPT for hogs with excellent results. Hers has a Burris 2-7x35 which is very good up close for quick shots on hogs and works out to 400 yds on deer or larger hogs. I've got a Leica 2-10x50, need more help for my older eyes.

If eyeguy can't take care of you then try this excellent buy. Leupold 3-9x40 with illuminated reticle on clearance for $299. Hard to see crosshairs in low light on black hogs.

Also for the price you stated you probably have a stock trigger so install the LaRue MBT trigger for $80. This will greatly improve your grouping and hunting.

Really like the round. Sonic to 1000 yards plus from short barrels, light recoil, 308ish energy. It's a lot of fun in a small package.

I built a 16" AR for my ten year old to shoot deer and hogs. It's awesome at that. He loves it.

I rebarreled my Mk12 Mod0 with a Grendel barrel and it's a great package.

I just bought a Howa mini action, heavy barrel, dropped it in an MDT LSS XL with a MagPul bipod and a folding M4 buffer tube with a Luth-AR stock. Without a scope it weighs 7.98 pounds.

Its running 5 shot groups at .65 with Hornady Black, but I only have 60 rounds through it. I expect it to tighten up some more. Very impressed with the Howa mini action for the money. Even the trigger is very good out of the box.

Have killed stuff right dead shooting Black in all three guns. But Federal Fusion is very, very impressive on game. It's also extremely accurate in my guns, matching Black. It won't fly for 900 yard steel like Black will, but it's a better hunting bullet. At SHOT the Federal guys were saying the Fusion bullet and ammo line was out shooting their Premium line of ammo. Oops.

My Grendel fits a lot of purposes. We do mostly night hog hunting and it puts them down where they stand. I've had it out to 600 yards now and I did decent but I'm not that good honestly. At 100, it holds around a half inch on a 3 shot group. I've had the most fun shooting steel at 300-400 yards. Eyeguy actually built the upper and it performs better than the shooter/me. BA barrel and a CMC single stage trigger match pretty well together on this one. Very happy with the round.

12.5" Grendel pistol. Eats wolf for plinking just fine. Haven't dialed it in with any particular hunting load but data found on other sites says must quality rounds still stay supersonic out to 1000 yards. Currently has a Simmons 1-6 on top. Surprising how well the optic is for the price. For sure a budget build. But that is how I roll!

Built as a fun gun and as a future suppressor host.

I put the Hornady Black 123 ELD-Ms on steel at 1000 yards last Friday. Vortex 4-16 PST. BA 18' barrel from EyeGuy. I can attest that round will do a number on hogs, as well.

I've put a Wilson Combat barrel & BCG in the cart several times, but haven't closed the deal yet because I'm still not clear if you can or can't use a poly mag. I know you can't with the 6.8spc/.224 Valk, but I've read in the Google the 6.5G fits in standard pmag, but only 27/30 or 16/20 in capacity.

Is there a mag issue?

Anyone know if the Wilson Combat barrels are there own or marked up Bear Creek, etc.
