I had "mild skin reactions" to cats growing up. Was a living hell growing up and interacting with any. You are just selfish.

I wouldn't get rid of the dog unless she was going into extreme allergic life-and-death response that merited hospitalization.

If the DR says, "get rid of the dogs" then do that, keep in mind, if the condition really is that extreme the DR is also likely to have medical treatments like injections and pills as part of that plan also.

My symptoms sound worse than what she's dealing with, and we didn't get rid of our pets as a kid. I've continued to own a dog as an adult because I'm treating my issue medically, not by trying to hide from it.

Getting proper treatment for the severity of the condition is the correct answer - which it sounds like that's been your plan all along.

As someone who has bad allergies...put the dog outside. Dogs have lived hot climates for a long time. Put a kiddie pool out there in the shade and change it regularly, or hell put in a grand to build an air conditioned dog house, wouldn't be that hard.

Yep. Get this: https://houndheater.com/products/hounditioner

My wife was allergic to 58/60 allergens on the allergy panel when she was tested. She wasn't allergic to dogs or mold.

We're not seriously talking about giving a seven year old kid weekly shots for seemingly forever, not so that they can live, but so the Dad can have a dog.

Stop over-exaggerating. The dog will live like max 15 years. 15 years of shots is a piece of cake, ESPECIALLY for a kid.

I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but asking for advice and then calling those that give what you don't like a jackass makes you a small person. Most people on this thread, I think, wouldn't even have asked a question and gotten rid of the dog immediately regardless of the experience of others. I know you THINK some of us who are telling you things you don't want to hear don't fully understand, but if that were true and your daughter doesn't need medication and may not be all that affected, then why bring it up in the first place?

Do whatever you want. I'm out.

I don't think I really adequately responded to your post... if you go back and look at about the first 4-5 responses, all said to get rid of the dog or something, somewhat similar. I had no problems with their responses and expected such.

When I received a snarky, condescending post, I responded accordingly. No one else on this thread was called a name and I appreciate ALL of the feedback I received.

I'm sorry you think I am a small person for responding to one person in the manner in which I was I responded too. That's not who I am, at all...

For the record, my daughter is doing great and hasn't had any major skin reactions since our consultation with the dr.

No, not suspect. She's on 2 allergy medications and can't stay outside too long without having a reaction of some sort.

Gotcha... I wasn't sure if you were saying she was literally allergic to all but 2 things or if the test was just unreliable. Thanks for clarifying!

Makes it difficult to like the outdoors with a rib who can't enjoy the outdoors.

So, I do a lot of outdoor stuff with my FIL (fishing) and a guy I went to grad school with (hunting).

Can shots or drops cure the allergy? We are in the same boat...my family and son want a dog but he is allergic. We are considering shots/drops (with his OK) in hope that he can get over this. I figure if we can spare him from a life of being allergic than it's worth it more than just for our desire to get a dog. My sister is allergic and it's a pita not being able to even go to friends house because they have an animal. Plus he has other allergies and shots might be in his future anyway.

Now if shots/drops aren't a miracle fix, then OK. We haven't gone to a doctor yet to discuss it. We are also looking at some hypoallergenic breeds like goldendoodles, but not sure that's even enough and we really love greyhounds (used to adopt retired racers prior to kids).

My son has been on drops for three years and has another to go. Our allergist/ent is hopeful that this will 'cure' him for many years, possibly into his thirties.

I don't think it will be a complete cure but for someone whose asthma attacks were so severe, we have not had to use his emergency inhaler for almost two years. That has been a significant improvement.

I would explore these options if your kid is having significant reactions, and I have been a huge fan of drops, especially for kids. However, we also tried to eliminate as much exposure to allergens as possible, in addition to the drops. I couldn't imagine bringing them into my home given his situation, and both my kids love dogs.

All that said I would talk to an allergist and discuss what is advisable.
