He makes a point to say that when they find Paul dead that both of his hands are broken.

Did he break them fighting to the death or did the gangsters break them as some sort of message about owing them money?

I read it back in the 90s and also took it that it meant he went down fighting.

I felt that wouldn't need to be highlighted. No one would ever think Paul didn't go down fighting. Thus, it was in my opinion a message by the killers.

The Burns family ran a general store in a one store town and still managed to do badly. They were Methodist, a denomination my father always referred to as Baptists who could read.

I grew up in the Methodist Church by the way."

I laugh every time I watch the movie and hear this line, and I am a Baptist.

I always thought of this as my brother and I - I was 14 when this movie came out.

My brother is the intellectual, best guy I know. Studied his ass off, got married to a good girl out of college. All I wanted to do is fish and hunt in high school. My entire life revolved around it besides working. Brother's not a risk taker at all - I'm all risk on all the time. Growing up everyone thought education was everything so that my brother would go far in life, and I wouldn't amount to much. Parents were proud of hell as my brother and probably wanted to kick my ass all the time lol.

In the end - I'm always scared of growing old and fishing alone with all my loved ones gone.

I grew up Lutheran but converted to Methodist when I got married as she was Methodist. When I asked what the Methodist position on alcohol was, she told me:

Thou shalt not drink
But, if thou does, thou shalt not drink to excess
But, if thou does, thou shalt not drink enough to pass out
But, if thou does, thou shalt pass out face forward so no one knows who you are.

Great book, great movie. Montana rivers are amazing to fish and explore, but the damn bears in parts of the state give me the heebee-jeebees.

Oregon is another state blessed with great rivers. I've got a list of PacNW rivers I'd like to fish before I die. But I like fishing the upper Deschutes, the Metolius, the Umpqua, the Yakima, the McKenzie, the John Day, and the Grande Ronde so much, I'll probably never fish my way thru half the rest of the list.

Another good fly fishing book is The River Why? By Dave Duncan.
