OB - do you have any recs for me? I'm willing to drive a couple of hours if necessary.

The dog is a golden retriever but I'm mainly focused on general obedience training as opposed to retriever training - I don't think she has it in her.

We were thinking maybe a 2 week - 1 month board n' train but open to suggestions. The thing I am probably most sensitive to is making sure she maintains the same general personality.

Let me know what you think.

Check with Best Retrievers in Paige and see if they have room for an obedience only dog. Their dogs are generally some of the most steady at a hunt test.

Kirk Wichman trains a lot of goldens and may be an option as well.

i sent my labradoodle to Legacy in Danbury, and he has turned out great. Still a great family dog with a great personality. Dennis is a great guy to work with. His program usually is 8-10 weeks though.

We did Man's Best Friend in Houston. 2 weeks and they did really well, then they brought us in and taught us how to maintain it. She has a lifetime of retraining if needed that they offer after she completed the programming.

We have used Unstoppable K9 for a few years now with our goldendoodle and ausiedoodle. they do anything from basic training, to personal protection, to agility and Frisbee. They also have daycare and boarding options where they will do some refresher training for free if you have done a past class with them.

First - I am a believer in hunt/retriever training even for a dog you may not hunt. It is a totally different level of discipline than regular obedience training. This is coming from experience of having 5-6 dogs trained over the years. We did the "Mans best friend" 1 month in patient training on a couple dogs and at the time thought they were good. Then did basic retriever training on a couple and the difference was amazing. Have since had a couple non-hunters retriever trained and been very happy. Hard to describe, but a huge diff in level of discipline and obedience.

That said, I have always used Pecan Hill kennels. They are old school and do use e-collars, but have never had an issue with dog personality changing. I had one female lab that had a VERY gentle spirit - I was worried how she would handle it - no issue at all. Like I said Pecan Hill is old school, and a lot of folks don't agree completely with old school methods - if you are worried about that might want to look elsewhere.

Just my 2 cents

Thanks - I would also describe my female as having a very gentle spirit.

Took our Brittany to Kickapoo. It's about 40 minutes out on 290. Mike, the owner, does all the main training himself and did a great job with our dog. Would definitely recommend checking them out. Plus he is a good old Ag!

rsmith, do you know if Pecan Hill will train a Viszla? Also, mind if I ask what the fees are? It appears as if they don't have a website that I could get this kind of information.

We're looking for some training for our three month old Viszla, but the only place we can find is out a distance and charges $800/month for three month training.

Your help is appreciated.
