Have not been back since Harvey. Just googling, it looks like some of the old eateries like Crazy Cajun, Virginia's (which did not get good marks surprisingly), Beach Street Station and Grill, etc. are still around. However, there are some new ones like Billy Joe's Craft House, and Phoenix.

Anyone have some comments on the new places, or something new on the old places? Suggestions?

I'd recommend Venetian Hot Plate

Next door to here is La Playa. Dang tasty Mexican seafood, but please be advised they only take cash or checks, no credit cards.

Castaways is rebuilt and open and of course owned by an Ag. I haven't been back since the storm but we are going for a week later this month. We always hit it up while we are there.

LaPlaya is where I saw a possessed woman run out the front door screaming and shakin' her finger (did I mention screaming) about no outside alcohol cause I had a beer in my hand. Just say hey, can't do that and it's gone and I stay. But after that meltdown, we went across the street and never went back. Many trips over the years, and not even considered again. Or now. She was possessed.

Well dang, that level of customer service fail is not good & the fact you won't consider going back is warranted and understandable. I will however, say that the Crab Meat Enchiladas they have on the menu and the Sea Bass they have when it is on special are both heavenly. I would suggest OP check it out and realize you can't bring an open beer, wine or cocktail into an establishment where alcohol is served. Just sayin'. For the record, the Venitian Hot Plate is a nice establishment with good food and good service.

Sorry Old Sarge, I got lost & forgot you were the OP. Given your treatment at said establishment, I totally get your stance. Perhaps the lesson here is don't bring an open container into an establishment in the State of Texas that serves alcohol, given our effed up, archaic and Puritan inspired alcohol laws.

La playa is damn good. My family lives on the island in corpus and we take a trip over to la playa pretty much every time I go visit.

The best place to me is Lisa Bella's.

La Barataria was running second several months ago but caught fire later in the evening after we had been there. I think it's going to be awhile before it reopens.

Venetian Hot Plate has been one of the top places to eat for a long time.

I will go to Seafood & Spaghetti Works every time I go down.....

Jay's is hard to beat. Guy has been here 40 years and he's not on the water. Same food all that time...

Best salad bar in town and the seafood feast will feed two people.

Eat anywhere and it'll be appreciated!!

They really need the support. Still don't have the rooms open they need to support everyone. Another year and it'll be back.

Edit
Jay's is jay's seafood and spaghetti works.

I was about to challenge you on Jay having the best salad bar as I thought you were talking about Castaway's.

We've had a place in Port for 12 years now. Venetian is the best, Jay's and Black Marlin are good for seafood to regular type food, Irie's is also good for seafood type tacos. I've eaten at all since the storm and the food is all just as good or close as before. As far as Mexican food goes, eat that someplace else because none of it is really good. If all else fails there's always Whataburger.

Is La Barataria going to reopen for sure? Would have been on my favorite list above. I hope it doesn't go the way of Pelican.

CE Lounge LIzard,

You are correct, as I certainly was in the wrong in absent mindedly walking up toward the front door with a beer in hand. NO doubt. It was a let me know, moment, that instantly turned into everything to just short of the green pea soup head spinning stuff.

I did mention to my wife, since it has been many years since that happened, that we had still never tried La Playa, just to see if I remembered it correctly. I won't repeat the comment, but the look was "NOPE".

ifishhandlie,

I just never thought that spaghetti was a "beach" type meal. What kind of seafood dishes does Jay's have?

La Barataria and Shells were our favorites last October.

Crab cakes and fried seafood to grilled fish and it's all pretty good. They have a "fresh catch" selection that varies, otherwise it's pretty much mahi. They have some different sauces that you can get on your fish (like Pappadoux's, but very different sauces). Stay away from the dill sauce IMO.

Roosevelt's is back open finally. It's more upscale and pricey but was damn good everytime ive eaten there. If not there, I like Stingrays for drinks and light dinner/appetizers and castaways for dinner is always good.

I think an establishment can get in SERIOUS trouble for someone walking in with an open container.

Try the new bar across the street from La Playa......Blue Water Cowboy or something close to that..

If they have a liquor license they can. She may also have had her fill of people trying to walk in with booze. It ain't Nam, there are rules

Seafood and Spaghetti Works is my favorite. Best pizza too. Haven't had anything bad there, and second the salad bar.

+1 for La Playa. If it's like before Harvey, some of the best food around. They had a ceviche sampler with three different types that was fantastic. Get there early on the weekend.

*all of this info is pre-Harvey.
Fair winds and a following sea.

I completely understand about the rules. We had been walking down the street and not paying attention to anything more than enjoying the afternoon. A simple "hey, you can't bring that here" would have sufficed and I would have rid myself of it in all haste as I would not want to cause any issues with that.

Linda Blair was not necessary.

They all need your support. I know the Venetian Hot Plate owner, great local lady (Linda) and really good staff. Like Port A Pizza. Took my F-I-L to MacDaddys Thursday before Memorial Day and it was pretty good.

Phoenix is good, but can be very slow at times.

Castaway's was torn down after Harvey and was moved across the street where Phoenix was.....

Yeah, they have moved to the Island Moorings marina. Small place.

The original Phoenix was about a four table sandwich place across from La Playa. They teamed up with "Pelican Landing" when it was sold, renovated and then called Phoenix. Complete new menu. Never was as good to me. I knew they moved on after Harvey but didn't know where.

Miss K's is a great sandwich place. It's a little past Cut Off on 361.
