Oak Trees

I live in the west Houston area, and we have two large 35 year old oaks in the front yard (spreading oaks perhaps?).

Just this year the tips of many of the branches have died off and a moss/fungus began growing.

Tree guy says it is from over-pruning in prior years, leave it alone and the tree will recover.

What say the outdoor board? Is this sound advice?

(I don't know how to post pics)

Where are you trying to post pics from?

Upload to a hosting site like Imgur and link the ".jpg" version here.

Tiny Pic FTW

Unless they were planted way back when, they're probably water oaks in Houson. Possibly Spanish (red) oak if they have pointy leaves, or maybe live oak.

An arborist or just a dude w/ a chainsaw?
Let's go, Brandon!

Moss & Fungus are two completely different things & require different solutions (or none at all) to remediate. Pruning would have nothing to do with the development of moss & IMO allow more light into the interior canopy which is detrimental to moss growth.

A true fungal problem, like Oak Wilt, CAN be spread through the wounds caused by pruning and won't just go away. You need an arborist.

Fair enough! Dude with lots of chainsaws, but I see your point.

Can't tell anything about your tree except it's a live oak or water oak next to a pine tree.

I can tell something has been over trimmed. Doesn't even look like a tree at this point. You need to take a picture of the actual fungus or whatever you want us to see. Get an arborist and not just some guy with a lot of chain saws.

Any construction, trenching or grading work done within 30' of the base of the trunks in last 5-8 years?

Or any low areas where water ponds for more than a day or so?

As mentioned, it has been over pruned in the past. But we need a lot more information. More, better photos, some photes that show the whole tree and what is around it.......were these trees flooded for an extended period?
