It's fun to think about yes. Having kids and most likely grandkids one day, truly living off grid isn't an option for us. I retired in 2014 and I'm waiting on my better half to retire but that won't happen for quite some time.

We plan on a 2nd property at the Oregon northern most coastal area when she retires. Bouncing back and forth from Texas to Oregon a couple times each year sounds perfect

When I retire, I don't want to work. Living off the grid sure seems like a hell of a lot of work.

Absolutely. And I like a lot of things about the grid. You know, like Direct TV, Whataburger, MLB, the phone I am typing on right now, etc..

What I do dream about is having no neighbors and only doing what Ibwant to do when I want to do it. I've got about 10 more years.

I would just consider solar power and well water "off-the-grid", but to each his own I guess

I'm with you. You can probably enjoy small doses of "off the grid" by doing some primitive camping and what not. But committing to that lifestyle sounds kind of ridiculous.

If you mean "I want to live far away (30 minutes or more) from annoying humans"... then, yes. Would prefer to have an alternate source of energy and water and grow most of my own food. But, that will be far from reality.

I'm fortunate to have been raised in a very rural setting and probably more fortunate to be able to raise my kids in the same way. Off the grid we are not....but away from distractions of the city we enjoy every day. Pretty special to look in a 15 mile radius and not see any neighbors. Learning to work and entertain yourself. I'm just not sure how life was meant to be any other way.

I would not want to live completely off the grid. Do not mind being remote but having running water, a warm shower, music, electricity would be ideal. Also access to hunting and fishing would be a necessity.

Nobody with any ability to do anything about it cares about peeps like Country or me. For three generations we put these "travelers " to work. Most moved on after a few months or years

Now, the crossers are either moving drugs or laying down looking for "asylum ". BS on the asylum

I don't mind having a place off the grid, but not as my permanent residence. I enjoy too much that society has to offer. Sure, we may fall of the grid for a few days, weeks, or months but not all the time.

Besides, my lease is in Warren in the big thicket. How much more off the grid does it really get?

For me it would have to be more like this

With the right setup it would be pretty awesome. Maybe have a boat or float plane to reach town from time to time.

Hmmm....the only part I would like about living off the grid is not having to deal with or talk to people. That would be pretty swell. But intentionally making my life harder in every other way seems like a stupid decision.

But if I was going to do it, it wouldn't be on a tony piece of dirt on an island like the pics above. I'm thinking more along the lines of 100,000 acres and no way to get in or out unless you have a plane. If it's not that, might as well live comfortably.

Even so, being without people might even suck after a while. I meet at least two people a month who baffle me as t how they have survived to the age they are. That's what steers my desire to become a hermit.

Any of y'all watch the documentary, The Last Alaskans? That is some remote living/surviving. National Wildlife Refuge would be the place to go to survive.

I would love to do an "internship" with Heimo Korth. And Bob Harte was my other favorite. The way he told stories during the interview reminded me of my Uncle.

Buddy is getting close but will never get off the electric grid. He has a rain water system with a capacity of 5000 gallons. His place is a weekend cabin now but he plans to retire in it about 3-4 years. Once he does he is putting solar panels on the roof but will use his electric line as a backup. His problem is he does not have enough farmable dirt to grow all his food. Hill country. He can grow enough to supplant HEB and he can kill hog year round so his meat is covered. So 75% or so off the grid

Oh and he has a 20-25 foot container that he is stocking with feed, seed, non perishable food, and most importantly, ammo.

Yea it's a really nice cabin but the most important fact is his wife loves that place more then he does. And that's saying something.
