I'm slowly buying parts to build a 300 Blackout pistol and I have my upper and lower receivers, but I'm at the point to decide if I want it to be piston driven or direct impingement. I'm intrigued by the Adams Arms kit, but it comes at a hefty price of $300 for the carrier, gas block and piston, you'd still need the bolt, barrel and hand guard.

Is the piston kit that much more reliable than an adjustable gas block on a DI pistol? I'm looking at an 8.5" or 9.5" barrel with a suppressor.

What say you TexAgs?

I have a 300 blackout via Diamondback. I love it

Piston kits add weight and narrow your options on handguards. I personally think DI is fine for most if not all uses. Even with the adjustable gas blocks or BCG's, there's not much of an advantage to running a piston system on 300 BLK.

How well can you shoulder these things? I wouldn't mind having Eyeguy put one together for me.

Adams Arms works with Samson Manufacturing for handguards. I have a Samson on another rifle and like it a lot so that's not a detriment to me. Yes there is some additional weight, but given it's a pistol barrel, I think I'll be ok with the weight. I'm more after reliability with and without a suppressor.

DI is the way to go

Add a law folder and it extends length of pull and makes it easier to carry discretely. There are some folders with adjustable LOP too.

Build an SBR, next time you're down you can shoot mine to confirm that it's worth the wait.

ETA- mine is a 10.5 Rainer match with a pistol length gas tube and it's never failed to cycle subs with or without the can.

On shouldering it, depends on what brace you do. The SBA3, SB PDW, and the Maxim all shoulder very nicely. The old Sig Brace is ok but bulky and I hate the blades now. But, with the new braces out, shouldering is not much different than a stock.

Pistons are expensive, heavy, and most likely won't be a huge difference to you unless you intend to run a ton of ammo. They are easier to clean, but, for the most part, add extra expense and weight for very little realistic difference in the gun. They are usually a little less accurate, as well, but on a short platform... eh, who cares?
