Four of us Class of "78" engineers are going to bass fish Lake Limestone this weekend March 8-10. One of us just bought a Lake House there but none of us have ever fished it.

Can the Outdoors Board give us any help? I know y'all know stuff! The weather is supposed to warm up for the weekend but it may rain some.

I grew up crappie fishing Lake Limestone with my Dad. During the 90's we always put in at Limestone County Park #2 boat ramp and fished stumps and brush along the eastern shoreline in view of the power plant. In the 2000's my dad started fishing the southern end of the lake. There is a lot of brush on the south end near the dam. This time of year, we would also fish the north part of the lake near the mouth of the Navasota River. You might have some luck with white bass in that area as they are getting ready to start running the river. My dad, to this day, calls large mouth "trash fish", so I am not much help there.

Thank you very much for your help. I had heard Limestone was a crappie and catfish lake but I am excited to hear they have sandbass. Catching big sandies this time of year is so much fun!

Our trip is really about fun and, honestly, I just really love any fish pulling my string.

I used to catch crappie by the hundreds there in the 80's. Also hit the white bass a few times.

As far as largemouth, I never caught anything bigger than about 4 pounds. Submerged timber, off the main lake, down the creeks.

In the 80's...

Two clicks off the bottom with a live minnow. Somewhere down a fork on the SE side of the lake with the boat tied off to a short stump...

I'm on the north side of the lake and have really only successfully found crappie under the bridge.

Granted I'm not good at seeking spots of activity.

You asked specifically about bass, so here's my take. Bass this time of year are interested in two things, feeding to prepare for the spawn and making baby bass. Water temperature and location will be key. If the water surface temp is near 60 or above, I would start in the backs of spawning areas in less than three feet of water. Water on the north shore lines, protected from the north wind and receiving sunshine from the south, will warm first. If the surface temp is much below 60, start on the first break off the shoreline, be it a drop off, grass line or tree line or drain. There will also be pre-spawn fish on secondary points in the creek channels and other break lines waiting to move up to spawn. I like to start shallow and work deeper until I find fish. Let the fish tell you what to do, and pay attention to the first fish you catch, he'll tell you a lot about how to catch more. My $0.02...

We (wife's family) are down at the end of county road 740. We never had much luck on bass but catfish and crappie hit every time we are down there. We don't fish much anymore, but you couldn't pick a better lake to sit around and drink whiskey.
