Dog has been sprayed twice in the past week and war on the little stinkers has been declared. Three down in three days. Neighbor has a shed on blocks that I believe they have a den under. I plan to speak with the neighbor after I am complete with the skunkicide.

PSA->

I bought the The Snare Shop #6 Tuff Trap Skunk Trap and I highly recommend this product. Make sure that you get the one with the removable back plate, makes it easier to bait without having to insert your arm down the trap.

The skunks can not spray you once they are trapped inside the trap. I have a tub full of water waiting in the yard and after I catch the skunk I just submerge the trap for 10 minutes, then open the gate and drop the dead skunk into a trash bag. I never have to touch the skunk but I wear latex gloves when handling the trap.

They will spray sometimes when submerged, so the water and cage will stink. I bait with peanut butter and peanuts.

I also setup my ring camera on the trap so I know when I have captured a skunk. Hopefully I can get the video to work:

Skunks are going under the fence.

It's that time of year when they're mating.

If your dog has been sprayed twice in a week, clearly the problem is that your dog is stupid. You can't fix stupid.

My wife's rat terrier mix from the animal defense league. This observation is 100% accurate.

She got the dog while I was away on extended travel. I replied to her that it was better than a boyfriend.

We had a skunk problem as well. The wildlife place I talked to actually suggested mothballs or ammonia soaked rags/tennis balls where the skunk was hanging out (behind trash cans)if your neighbor doesn't have animals that get under theretrythat

I have a huge greenbelt adjacent to my back yard and have had many skunk problems over the years. I tried mothballs and fox scent and chili powder and playing a loud radio. Nothing helped the situation. I had to call Critter Control, who caught many squirrels and raccoons and finally several skunks.

Sounds like you need to get started using blindey's tried-and-true pest elimination system.

Skunks are a unique problem and you need a unique predator to eliminate them:

The Great Horned Owl. With a weak sense of smell, these indiscriminate winged killing machines will have your dog smelling pristine before you know it.

Since the Great Horned Owl is pretty much an apex predator, they'll just leave on their own when the food supply is gone. So no need to introduce layer after layer of animal up the food chain until you're stuck crating hibernating bears to send to a Bulgarian circus under the cover of night.

My last dog, Whiskey, didn't seem to mind skunks at all. He was an outdoor dog and so I figured it was his own problem.

Getting sprayed by skunks was far from his most major issue.

He never did learn to avoid porcupines. I think that we had to pull porcupine quills from his nose on 15 to 20 occasions, maybe more. I told the vet once that he hadn't seen Whiskey for a while because he had denuded every porcupine in the area.

Whiskey loved to crawl inside the carcasses of dead cattle. Often he would be covered in slime that made you want to run away.

Of the three, I'll take skunks any day.

Just curious, what was Whiskeys breed? We had a dog,a black mouth curr that would roll in a dead cow. She did this numerous times. There were times I got the dry heaves unsuspecting the smell. I miss that B*tch.

Several months ago my Boston Terrorist absolutely destroyed a skunk that got into the back yard. He has received at least 10 baths and other things to help remove the smell, but every now and then you can still smell it on him.

Shot one a while back with a .22 pistol firing .22 shorts.

All that did was piss him off to no end and he sprayed this wild green funk out of his rear for a solid two minutes.

Finally finished him off with a 20 gauge. That part of the property stunk for hours.

That's not so many - we have a warehouse not far from a wooded area with a creek. They are destructive little *******s. We trap and kill about 20 a year - plus, a few raccoons and lots of squirrels.

My skunk problem can only be described as a plague at this point. Six skunks trapped and more to go.

I made the mistake of googling 'how many skunks in a den". The morning fog today is thick with the stench of overwhelming odds.

I know this has probably been posted before, but I had success baiting a trap w/cat food, then using an old window curtain to cover the trap. The skunk would then be transported to a better location.

Friend of mine left his door open when he went to the bar. Came home after way too many and had a skunk in his old farm house. His whiskey thinking told him to shoot it. His next step to legendary redneck status was to use 22 rat shot.

My dad and uncle trapped coons and sold hides back in the mid to late 60s. Old man swears a guy brought in a skunk hide to the buyer and actually got paid for it.

I know 11 sounds like a bunch, but I have bad news. Once they find a place they like, you are SOL.

My FIL had them take a liking to underneath his storage shed. Over a 5-10 year period he trapped dozens and dozens of those sum*****es.

He fixed his problem by selling that building and building a barn with a concrete slab.

My dad used to catch them as babies, take out the spray glands, and sell them to people as pets... We're from a pretty redneck area.

PLEASE do not use moth balls!!!!!!! They are toxic to anything that might ingest it (kids, dogs, wildlife, etc...). Ammonia typically works but dissipates quickly so additional soaked rags/balls have to be re-applied.

I can't believe any "wildlife place" would actually suggest moth balls.

What is your recommendation?
Tursiops93
How long do you want to ignore this user?

If there is something under a porch, shed or area such as that, ammonia soaked rags/tennis balls will typically drive them out. The only way to ensure they don't return though is to seal up/board up the entry point once the critter is gone or it will be a never ending battle. Keeping wildlife out of your yard on a regular basis is unrealistic since we do live in Texas. Minimizing food sources (dog/cat food left out) or habitat (wood piles, open access to get under decks/sheds, etc...) helps.

Unfortunately in your case, you can't control your neighbors or their property
