saw this post on P board and wanted some feedback...

Using a new, premium blade every day, it's still less than the multi-blade options from Gillette or DSC.

I have not used one of these things in decades.

Opinions?

I shave in the shower with one of the 5 blade jobbers, and a single cartridge lasts me a month. Of all the things to save money on, shaving is not one that I skimp on.

Well, I reached puberty long ago and have man whiskers. I go through at least one 5 blade each week.

Merkur razor.

Feather blades. Tried a bunch of blades and these were by far the best for me. The only complaint I've ever seen about them is that they are too sharp.

You can use the above with canned shave cream, but I'd highly recommend going badger brush and soap/cream.

I to a double edge safety razor last year and have no regrets. Change blades every 2 or 3 days, great, close shave. Takes a while to get used to and you'll cut yourself a time or two but I really enjoy it.

There was a long thread about this on OB a while back but can't find it. Style and blades are all unique to the face. It's kind of like the BBQ palate

I use gillette's 7 o'clock blades. Great longevity and close comfortable shave. My go to shave soap is hanslinger sheeps milk. Made in austria fantastic lather and is cheap

Exactly this.

You can get 100 Feather blades on Amazon for around $10. I can easily go 2 years on 100 blades.

I use a new blade every week, way cheaper and a more consistent shave in my opinion

my exact set-up. My go to creams are TOBS Eaton College and Sandalwood and Proraso Green although I have a new bowl of Proraso Red I'm about to open and try.

Good advice but the first time you try to use a safety razor, do it Friday night or Saturday morning so you'll have a chance for the cuts to heal before work on Monday.

Same here, which is why I shave in the shower. The shower softens your beard and helps to keep you from donating a pint of blood each morning.

I started with white and red proraso soap. Tried TOBS sandlewood cream and have been using it ever since. It's not a fair comparison (cream VS soap), but the TOBS was far superior in my opinion.

Side note: if you're ever in London and get a chance to go down Jermyn Street definitely take the time to go. The classic shave, shoe, hat, and tailor shops are all in the same area and it's a cool way to spend an afternoon.

I did this for 2 years. Just got a Harry's kit (target) from the wife for Christmas, the 5 blade is heaven.

I'm done with that old crap and back to a moden setup for good. This is not really a place to save money.

On blade changes, haven't changed the harry's cartrige since christmas and it is still holding up well.

I used to change the old skool flat blade weekly. Still would always cut the hell out of myself.

enjoy...

When I don't have a beard I use a merkur razor and I like gillete 7 o'clock or personna blades. The feather blades are the sharpest, but they were a little too aggressive for my face. Maybe before you make the jump at least try a good soap like taylor of old bond street and a brush. Even a good soap makes a tremendous difference than the crap you buy at the grocery store.

yes, I've been down Jermyn Street numerous times, as I usually stay on St. James Square when in London. Always make a point to get a shave at Geo Trumper. Nothing like it!

I'm a big fan of the adjustable safety razors when you're first starting. It helps helps to be able to adjust how aggressive it cuts.

I have a vintage Gillette Fatboy razor and it is fantastic once you figure out where you want to on it. Too aggressive and you get cuts, to little and it takes way to many passes to shave and causes irritation

At home: standard Merkur adjustable handle, bowl filled with proasso or l'occitane, badger brush.

On the road: 1950's Gillette travel razor (3 piece non adjustable with a 2in handle) and a tube of the Bigalow shave cream from blood bath and body works, no brush

Feather blades always

I only shave every other day during the week and typically don't on weekends. A five blade cartridge lasts me at least 2 months.Of course my beard is not as heavy and coarse as some of the cavemen on here.

The five-bladers don't even last me a week. Some of us have harder beards I guess. Also they give me horrible razor burn. That was my main motivator in switchng. I get it terrible on my neck. The single blade has eliminated that problem for me, and in my opinion does result in a closer shave, for me at least. I've the five blades work for you then great, but there are legitimate reasons to switch and it's not just to save money.

This is why I made the switch many years ago. I use JM Frasers shave cream and a super badger brush. Merkur HD razor and Feather blades make short work of a hard beard that grows out of (apparently) sensitive skin.

+1 for Merkur razor but I like Derby blades. I find the feathers to be too sharp as well. Safety razors have fixed my razor burn as well...I have a pretty heavy beard and sensitive skin. After reading today about Gillette's new ad campaign, I'll be a neckbeard before I give them a dime.

I can't grow legit facial hair to save my life, but what I do grow is about as soft as rocks.

I go through a double edged safety blade every two-three shaves.

Meh. My Mach 3 handle is a nice machined/nickel plated job & I've used it for 13 yrs and counting. I buy store brand blades & just ordered a new knock off set from Amazon to try out.

Find store brand cartridges you like - that's the best way to save $.

Good advice here.

The Wife gifted me a shaving set for Christmas and my first attempt with the new safety razor made me look like I lost a fight with the law mower.

Because it takes me a bit longer, I use the safety razor on Sunday night and the 5 blader through the week - but I'll admit that using a brush/soap and safety razor has been a lot of fun so far.

I picked up a Feather AS-D2 a few years ago after I decided I wasn't quite manly enough to try shaving myself with a straight razor.

I'll be honest I don't really notice any difference in the shave quality between it and the cartridge style but the razor is definitely more 'solid' and will more than likely be the last one I ever buy. Also as others have said the feather blades are the way to go.

To each his own. I can't get a close shave with the single blade. The 5 blade has always been the best. In my opinion, it is the lubricant you use (isn't it always!). I now use Bulldog Shave Gel:

Bulldog on Amazon

I get the best shave since using a body wash soap Suave used to make but no longer does (Cocoa butter something). I wish they still made it.

The badger brush gave me a rash!

I switched to single blade safety razor about 10 years ago and have not looked back.
The only thing that has changed is now instead of shaving my face (with a lot of hair up top), now I shave my head every 2-3 days and keep a full beard

When I stared shaving my head with a safety razor there was a learning curve again, feather blades are super sharp!

I just don't shave. Much more convenient.
