I appreciate it! think 4831 might be the ticket but curious what you ended up with

How much do the shells average to by loading/reloading your own?

I only have a 270 WSM and I've tossed around the idea of getting into reloading. Mainly from the standpoint of exploring 110 grain rounds at 3400+ fps, and maybe later exploring a 140 grain round.

I was getting 3400 out of the 130s and 3250 from the 140s.
65.5 gr Rel 22 for the 140s.

The cartridge will match or out do a 270 Wby.

My notes from my book:

Projo: Nosler Accubond
Weight: 180 grn
Poweder: H414
Charge Weight: 62.5 grn
Ogive seat length (Hornady Comparator #8): 2.296"
Primer: Winchester
Brass: Winchester
Brass Trim: 1.751"
Neck Turn: .014"

I dont have a chrono, so i dont know actual velocity. I have it estimated at 2825fps. I squeezed out a .4" group at 100 with this load, that was good enough for me and I quit development after that.

With 62.0 grains my group was about .75" at 100.

Reloader 17 gets a lot of good reviews with the .300 WSM, and rumor has it the felt recoil is less. That is just what i have read, no experience personally. 4831 is a listed powder for it too.

Awesome thank you. That load sounds good enough for anybody! Never tried h414, will have to watch for a can.

Nw80 i love rl22, use it in my 280, figured the wsm might run out of capacity before the 22 could hit its stride, but nosler recommends it for 200s and up. Hmmm...

The WSM cartridges were a solution in search of a problem.

That's pretty much true for virtually ALL rounds that aren't .22-250 (or other similar varmint load), .243, .270, .30-05, .308 and one of the .300 mags or 7 mags if you want a magnum.

I ran the Nosler 190 ABLR factory loads for in my 300 wsm for multiple western hunts this past year and was very pleased with their performance. I know you are focused on hand loads but those ran very accurate on some long shots.

Still need to try the 200 gr ELDX and compare.

I like H414, i use it in my .243 as well. It's a flattened ball powder that meters really well and burns clean. It's actually on the slower end of the burn rate, but to me it feels like it has a snappier recoil than some others.

I'll post my 300 WSM load data tomorrow.
I also use Rel 22 in it.

For somewhat hard to find and expensive rounds like the .270 WSM, you'll save a lot. Once you find your load and assuming you already have brass.

Brass is typically the most expensive component of a round, but the good news is that its reusable and the even better news is that if you aren't too good to scrounge, you can usually find some at your local range for free.

Looking at a quick search online, .270 WSM brass new is going to run about $1.00 per for Winchester or Federal. Not the best in the world, but I've had really good luck with Winchester brass.

Projectiles range from cheap to expensive depending on your brand, weight, etc. Powder is the same, primers are about $.04 per if you aren't ordering and paying the ORDM made up hazmat fee.

So, assuming you are buying 100% new everything to start:

Brass - $1.00 (Win or Federal, Hornady is about 10% more, Norma is about 2x)
Projectile (Sierra Game Changer) - $.90 per
Powder - assume $30/lb, about 110 loads out of a pound - $.27 per charge
Primer - $.04 per
Total - $2.21 per round initial cost
Total #2 and on - $1.21 per round, give or take

Factory ammo runs anywhere from about $35/20 ($1.75 per) up to $70/20 ($3.50 per). So initial investment is more expensive, but your brass cost is no longer in the equation for loads #2 on through end of brass life (usually about 10-15 loads).

So over time, yes there is some savings. But it isn't all that much. The biggest benefit is finding that load combination that shoots lights out from your gun, and usually it's some combination you can't find on a shelf. Plus, reloading is fun (for me anyway) and a good way to shut out the world and make something I will enjoy later.

Thanks a ton guys. I totally forgot about the ELDX, would rather use that than a VLDH. So now looks like I'm gonna have to buy ABLRs in 190 and 210, box of 212 ELD-X, and a can of h414, then get to work!

Completely agree

Thanks for the breakdown! I think you and NW80 just convinced me to get into handloading.

I normally spend $40/box on my normal ammo (Winchester Ballistic Silvertip). An off-the-shelf option for a 110 grain hot load I was looking at would have been $70 with shipping. And who knows if that load would have even shot well...

Your probably right about that. Who knows whether or not your barrel could get it stable.

I just went thru that exact same thing with a different cartridge. Neither one of my guns could stabilize it.

I realize that you want to shoot heavier bullets. Good for you! Multiple men who shoot for a living tell me to not shoot anything less than a 175 for a .30 cal.

But!
When I thought speed out did bullet weight I loaded ( and I was confused, not Rel 22) I loaded:
150 Accubond
Fed 210 Primer
Norma Brass
64.5 Vitavoy-N-550

3300 fps at the muzzle

.18" groups

Also realize, powder charge pales in comparison to seating depth when you're looking for accuracy!
Pay more attention to accuracy vs muzzle velocity, then "dope" your scope!

Thanks! Working on a heavy load because the rifle came with a ~3100fps 168 ttsx load worked up (over h4350). Don't think it shoots 2s though!

I never could get Barnes bullets to shoot worth a $h!t. But a buddy told me to seat them 1-5000ths deeper.
