This is more of a 2019 season question, but my 11 year-old nephew is wanting to go hunting and his father isn't an outdoorsman at all, so it's on me to get him outside. Due to time and distance constraints, I'd like to do a guided hunt to increase chances of success.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a good outfitter that would do a weekend guided youth hunt at a reasonable (say ~$2000) fee? He doesn't need a magnificent trophy, so a management buck and a good experience would be sufficient.

Pretty well anywhere in Texas would be acceptable.

Location isn't hugely important. I'm in Dallas, he's in Houston, and we have family throughout Far West Texas and South Texas.

He doesn't have previous hunting experience, but has an aptitude for shooting when we get together once per quarter or so. He's able to handle a .270 well, so I'd be comfortable with him being able to take a deer.

I'm not taking applications for new nephews at this time! Since I only have a daughter, I'm overcompensating with my nephew since I'll need him to be my hunting buddy when I get old.

I got a buddy that has a place just west of Waco that might be able to help you out. i have sent him a text to see if he is interested.

Find a place that will do a management buck/doe combo with free hogs/varmits. You get the buck and he gets a doe for first deer. Plus if the kid has not hunted/shot before you are going to want to put in some range time on safety, good shooting practices and where to aim.

Not to rant but a pet peeve of mine is when parents buy their kids a "big" deer for their first deer and then the kid expects to hunt at that level every time. I feel kids should learn about hunting as realistic as feasible-sometimes you see deer sometimes you dont, Sometimes you get a buck, sometimes you get a doe.

See below. I pulled this off a thread on 2cool fishing.com
My brother and I took our boys here a couple weeks ago. It was an incredible experience and worth every penny. Brett caters to the youngsters and does everything he can to get the kids on a nice management buck and as many does as you want to shoot. It is a 14,000 acre low fence ranch about halfway between Carrizo Springs and Eagle Pass. Some of the bucks you will see will take your breath away. I bet you can get a hunt in before this season ends. It cost a little more than your stated budget, but you won't regret it.

"The Holden Pasture deer lease is a free range, low fence deer lease. We are not MLD, we have no DMP pens, no biologist and no introduced genetics just a good old fashion wild-whitetail deer lease, nothing fancy just old school fun. We run very few trail cameras keeping the surprise in the hunts but we do run a few to help us learn and watch a few bucks as they progress. We feed Double Down Deer Feed protein pellets heavy, Year Round and hunt very hard. Several Management Deer hunts and a few trophy deer hunts are sold on the ranch each year to help with expenses but other than that its just friends and family. To book a hunt with us or get on the list to become a lease member you can call my office at 281-344-9083 ask for Brett Holden"

I think my Dad charges $1600 a weekend, no trophy fees for up to three hunters for a three day weekend at our place, if interested. All the pigs/small game you want included.
