I'm picking up the rifle from jmazz tomorrow. The power of TexAgs at work!

Any other advice for the new hunter? I hunt mainly at my buddy's ranch in Carta Valley. We hunt deer, mouflon, aoudad, and hogs. Lots of hogs. I've got good cold weather gear, I think. Most of it is from my USMC days. My legs stay colder than my upper body most of the time (figured that was natural). I use the "no scent" detergent on all my gear. What's the best brand of ammo? Most economical? Seriously, I have fallen in love with hunting over the past year. I wet with him for a few days last Christmas and have been as much as I can since then. I want to dive head first and start teaching my kids as soon as I feel experienced enough. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Gig 'em!!!

Shoot every aoudad you see. Look up their anatomy... shot placement on them needs to be through the shoulder or if they're quartering away. A standard behind the shoulder shot, like you would place on a whitetail, usually results in a gut shot.

Wool socks... always wear them unless it's really hot. Layer up and always bring an extra jacket or sweatshirt into the blind. I use all the descent stuff but love rubbing cedar on me and my gear before I get in the stand/blind/field.

Be still and minimize movement. Pay attention to the animals you're watching and they're body language. They can you tell a lot about what's going on if you pay attention. I would recommend a phone Skope adapter for your binoculars. I just got a set and they would be great for someone that is just starting out to take pictures of deer in the field and compare the age/score they think, with others back at camp.

Good luck!

Binoculars as mentioned above with the Crooked Horn bino strap system. Insulated boots and coveralls or bib. Remington Core Lokts (green/yellow box).

I have friends who use heaters in box blinds. I've been hunting for 35 years and have never done this. Hell, I'd rather sit in a tripod and be cold than in a tower or ground box with a heater. But that's just me.

Don't ever try it then. Cause you might find out that you like it.

I'll sell you this rifle for a steal of a deal. It'll come with a soft case and a box of ammo. I picked it up earlier this year and haven't even shot it yet. It came with a Bushnell Banner scope rather than a Weaver. I'm in B/CS. $350
I think here are several of us that would have bought this from him if OP didn't. I have one in 7mm-08 and it is fantastic.

You still make it up to Gunsmoke every now and then? Have been mulling over picking up a 7mm-08 for my son as he gets big enough to start shooting. Would be grateful to take a look at your savage, maybe even put a few rounds down range. Range time and ammo are on me if we can work it out.

I moved to Pflugerville a few months ago. But I would be glad to lend it to you. I may be in BCS the next couple weeks. We can meet up or I will leave it with Kelso or BBS.

BBS may be willing to sell his. He is not a big seller but everything else he shoots has a break so it is not his favorite.

That would be awesome. Let me know if you make it over, would be grateful to test drive it. I'm sure I know BBS regarding a potential sale, but PM me and refresh my memory?

Remington is junk. Go with savage or consider the Ruger American like others have said. And congrats on the deer!

What makes Remington "junk"? I bought a model 700 .270 about 4 years ago and it's pretty accurate. Hell its hit everything I've shot at no problem.

The 700 is okay, the OP is referring to the 783... that model is junk

With the suggestions from other Ruger American predator. Grabagun had them for a long time at $369 $500 with a vortex scope

Here's the one I got from there. It also has a threaded barrel if you ever might add a can. Added my own scope. Vortex 4-16

Go pick up a couple of boxes of Remington Core-Lokt ammo from Walmart. They're $2-3 per box dollars cheaper than academy, and $6-8 dollars per box cheaper than Bass Pro.

+1 more for the 783 is poorly made.

I won one in 308 as a door prize at a clay shoot a few years ago. My biggest problem with it is it will not strip the second round off the magazine unless you apply upward pressure on it.
