I'm new to hunting (got my first deer last week!) and my wife is letting me buy a rifle for my Xmas gift. Both the Remington 783 and Savage Axis are in my price range. I figured those two are a good place to enter into the fray. Is there a real difference between them? I've looked around the internet, but trust y'all more than other random googling.

Congrats on your first deer.

Have you considered Ruger American series?

Between those two, I'd take the Axis over the 783.

I'm considering selling my Rem. 700 after this season because it's to much of a investment with a new stock and trigger on top of the gun cost. I'm going with a Bergara instead. You might look into them depending on your budget.

Price range is under $400 for rifle. Still need ammo, case, etc., as well. Would like to keep the total purchase around $550-$600.

If you watch for sales you can catch the Ruger American predator for your price range with a decent entry level vortex on it.

Just going to suggest that if a Remington 783 and Savage Axis are in his price range... a Bergara probably isn't.

Under 400 should be a Ruger American everyday and twice on Sunday.

Personally I'd lean Savage. Accutrigger and button rifling.

I don't dislike them enough to sell off my Remingtons but I'm not a big fan of the company. The faulty trigger/safety drove me away before they corrected it and have only bought one Remington action since (custom gun from Derrick at Horizon Firearms)

Your probably not going to like this or go for it, but if Inwas you I would buy a 20+ year old Remingon or Savage with a decent scope already on it. You can find them around.

I even saw a New Haven
Winchester 70 in 30-06 the other day at a pawn shop in Temple for $599. Had a Nikon scope on it.

Only took 12 minutes for the Bergara suggestion. The OB is on it's toes today.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

T/C Compass in 308, Leupold rings, vortex scope

My uncle had a lot of accuracy issues with a 783 he got as a gift. The scope and rings that came in the package were worthless.

Shot a ruger 6.5 over the weekend and it's very impressive for the price. The magazine sucks and I'm not a fan of the trigger but for a sub $400 gun, it shoots damn good. Sub 1" all day long.

The 783 action isn't great... Savage over the two you mentioned for sure but take a look at the ruger.

I think the action and barrel are better than the Remington. Maybe 5-10 years ago I would say differently but the new remingtons, especially the 780 series, are cheap and not that great.

Stay away from the 783.

If you can get the Axis with accutrigger, then that is better than the plain old Axis. But, I'd take a plain old Axis over a 783.

I'd get a Ruger American over the 783 and Axis.

I will say that I dropped one of these mod kits in my Axis .223 and it improved the trigger immensely.

Remington is junk. Go with savage or consider the Ruger American like others have said. And congrats on the deer!

CDNN Sports has a Ruger American in .308 with their adjustable trigger and sling for $299

That leaves money for decent glass.
CharlieBrown17

I prefer their trigger to the savage adjustable.

Both are fine, and can be made pretty good if you're willing to pull the action and mess with the adjustment.

The way the ruger action mates with the stock is way better. Their bedding system increases the chance a stock mass produced rifle is a shooter. A lot of the rugers come not completely free floated but if you loosen the action screws slightly and get the barrel right in the channel it'll shoot inch groups. Decent chance it will even if you don't mess with it.

Academy has a Savage Axis XP for $299 with a $60 cash back. I think I might go grab it this weekend.

It wouldn't be the OB if I didn't suggest over budget.

Check walmart!

Was in there over in Southwest Va. and they had 308 about $300 and 6.5 creedemore for less than $400. If I recall they were both savage. The 308 had the accu-trigger which is fairly nice for this price range.

Cabela's / Bass Pro Savage 110 Tactical Hunter at $499 is worth a look. Stock adjusts from 12.5 to 13.5 length of pull and barrel is threaded.

That's it. The axis was initially introduced as the "edge". It became the standard in budget accuracy. The lead engineer asked savage for a significant raise and they said no. He took a job at ruger. He redesigned the axis, making "improvements" these changes were a mix of actual improvements and generic changes to avoid copyright issues.

The design of the ruger American is better on paper. I personally trust the manufacturing at savage more. But they are both way better than that Remington.

I'll sell you this rifle for a steal of a deal. It'll come with a soft case and a box of ammo. I picked it up earlier this year and haven't even shot it yet. It came with a Bushnell Banner scope rather than a Weaver. I'm in B/CS. $350

Absolutely. If these are my choices I would buy only that one.

I think here are several of us that would have bought this from him if OP didn't. I have one in 7mm-08 and it is fantastic.
