My son has a 257 wby and I have a 300 wby. He's wanting a gun for Christmas and he's thinking about the 270 to have a bit more power or the 240 just to have something a little more unique. I know next to nothing about either of these calibers so any help is appreciated.

The 7mm wby mag is right in the middle between his and your gun. You can go from around 80 grain bullets to around 200 grain with those three.

Why? Why is your needle stuck on Weatherby? A 270 WSM will do anything a 270 Wby will do with 10% less powder. Personally I think Weatherbys are way overrated.

We've got plenty of the standard stuff, he's specifically trying build a wby collection if you will.

I have shot a Mark V in 270 as my main rifle nearly all my life. IMO it's on the upper end of what you need for whitetail, but I have also taken mule deer and elk with the same gun, so it's very versatile.

If I were to get one only for whitetail, I'd look long and hard at the .240.

Weatherby makes a helluva rifle.

Why not look at the 6.5-300wby, I have had a 257 wby (I will get another one someday) Between me and my dad we have a 300wby, 340wby and a 30-378wby. The 6.5-300wby has gotten both of our attention and is very likely the next large rifle purchase we will make. It perfectly fits the bill between the 240 and 270 while also offering heavier bullet weight options than the 257 as well.

I like the .240WBY for whitetails. I really want a .257WBY to fill the gap between my .243WIN and 7MM mag, but the ammo is 'spensive, and I also need to find the $$$ for the rifle.
