7. Ruger Precision Rifle - This would break the bank and leave very little for optics, but I've heard here and elsewhere that the gun is "boringly accurate". Admittedly, it seems a bit overkill if the primary use isn't long range shooting.

The RPR with a SWFA SS 10x MilQuad would be right in your $1500 budget.

Connect with the poster here who won an RPR, see what kind of deal y'all can strike, and you'll have money left for some boxes of Hornady 140 ELD-M. My RPR is, yes, boringly accurate with this ammo.

+1 on the Tika - have one in 25-06 and it has been my favorite gun for the last 5 years. Tack driver with whatever amo i feed it, exceptional trigger out of the box. And affordable - best gun for the $$ IMHO.

Yeah, started texting with someone about the same gun. Basically, $849 then scope... I have a couple options that would work well.

You don't choose a 6.5 Creedmoor rifle. The 6.5 Creedmoor chooses you.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Gotta love it when you ask for people to help you narrow it down and you end up with more options than you started with.

EyeGuy, I would really love to do a hands on comparison of the Bergara HMR, RPR, and Tikka rifles. Do you happen to have all of these in the store? I might be able to stop by Friday afternoon. Meant to respond sooner but I've been swamped at work this week... just so happens the dog woke me up and now I can't get back to sleep.

To the guy with the RPR possibly for sale, if you want to post contact info, I can send you an email to discuss. Not 100% sure it is the right gun for my use case but willing to chat about it.

Another plus for the tikka is they made a special magazine for the 6.5 CM that is longer than their other short action mags. If you get into handloading this lets you seat the bullet closer to the lands if this gives you better accuracy, and increases effective case volume for higher velocity potential.

A Tikka + an SWFA 3-9 would give you a setup that's a reasonable weight for hunting and capable of shooting longer range when you feel like it. It also wouldn't break the bank and the SWFA has a reputation for very repeatable dialing. On one range trip I was shooting my AR (1-6.5 BDC scope) alongside my 6.5 CM (3-12 with zero stop elevation turret and MIL reticle) and was amazed how much easier it was to get hits.

I wouldn't worry about weight, I shoot a Fieldcraft in 6.5 CM (starts a hair over 5 lbs) and shot 40 rounds in a sitting a couple weeks ago.

I can't shoot like cledus. That group he posted is crazy good. I shot this out of my Tikka T3X CTR with 20" barrel. I am never good enough to not blow at least one shot. This was 9 rounds of factory 140 ELD shot slow fire.

That's a hell of a fine grouping, I know the feeling about pulling one it happens all the time. This is my best 10-shot 100yd group to date, as you said always seem to pull 1. Same setup and same day as that crazy good group I posted earlier, that was a great day at the range.

Yup. IMO, the super high quality factory ammo is the main reason to buy a 6.5.

Sure the ballistics are nice, but how often is that a real field application unless you're a PRS shooter or true LR hunting on all your shots.

The CM wins lots for it's plethora of great ammo, low recoil, and tons of guns to choose from chambered in the CM
