**edit to add** point well taken, we will not feed the deer. Thank you for all the impassioned feedback!

My apologies in advance if this is a dumb question. We recently moved into a house in a neighborhood that has tons of deer. We often see them in our front and back yard, and our young kids really love seeing them. What would be the easiest way for me to get more of them coming around or getting the ones who do come around to come more often? Do I need a feeder or can I just drop corn regularly? Finally, we have a 5 foot tall corral fence. Will they jump that to get food or should I just do something behind the fence? Thanks in advance for being gracious in your answers to this non-hunter.

You need to buy a protein feeder and keep it full of protein pellets. The deer will appreciate this.

No need to get a feeder unless you just don't want to have to remember to feed every day. I would say you'll see many many many more deer on your food if you corn outside of the fence. 5 ft is nothing for a deer to jump when they're being chased by something, but they won't necessarily choose to go over one just for food. Just shake a bucket of corn out when you get home from work and you'll be amazed how quick they learn the sound of that bucket means food!

Plant pansies in your yard!

But be prepared to replant them every day!

We use to fill 2 liter plastic bottles with corn. They will kick that bottle for hours!
Floor it until you see God

If you live only one more day it will be long enough for you to regret this idea.

They will consume your bedding plants, yard grass, shrubs, trees and garden vegetables. Be careful what you wish for.

Beat me to it! Any high dollar landscaping plant will do.

Hint: As you do landscape, look around the neighborhood to see what has survived. There are some "deer resistant" plants that really aren't when times get the slightest bit hard. I learned that the hard way after landscaping my sisters lawn in Liberty Hill.

If you really desire this, just make it a routine to throw out some hand corn in a pre determined area every evening you get home. Kind of like feeding the dogs. Deer love hand corn and you may have better chance of nice bucks showing up as they prefer hand corn to a feeder anyways. Once they get used to it, you will most likely have deer waiting for you every evening.

Cap both ends of a 4" PVC sewer pipe (one end with a threaded screw cap) and fill with corn. Stake it down and you have the perfect deer/hog feeder to keep them entertained and in one place:

This!
I've been putting out corn for the deer near my lot, and now I have them running to my truck as I pull in the driveway every evening. I have had as many as 40 lined up down my drive

My bird feeder does the job. They empty it every evening.

Chris I would not feed them. They can really tear up your and your neighbors landscaping. Just big rabbits

Ha ha ha ha, thank you all for the feedback. I think I'll just enjoy what we have right now and not press the issue.

Yes, because if you don't have pigs IN your yard right now, You probably will after you start feeding. LOL.

you are making the right decision. Just google Lakeway and see all the problems deer can cause in a suburban setting. They have been fighting over population for decades

I've wondered if antelope could get that used to humans.

I highly recommend against this idea. As mentioned, eventually the hog will follow. Also there are several growing disease concerns with deer around neighborhoods. I could go on, but I high discourage trying to get deer around your house.

The easiest way to get more deer in your yard would be to come to my house and take the deer out of my yard. It's a win win for both of us. A second option is to add new grass and then finish by landscaping with deer resistant plants, they'll line up three deep to devour your newly planted items.

I do that too. I have a scraps bowl that I fill it & dul in the pemasyitr. They deer come within 10 ft of our front door to eat out of the feeder. We counted 19 the other day in the pasture.

Stake it vertical I assume? What size holes do you drill?

You want to get Lyme disease? because that is how you get Lyme disease.

Just enjoy what deer comes there naturally. Oh, and don't plant any Japanese Yew ornamental plants. Highly toxic to deer.

This. When you finish with his deer, come to Kerrville and take some. They are in my front yard at all hours of the day. There are deer at my office. I can rarely look out a window at work or at home and not see a deer. Forget having any nice plants; they'll eat anything when hungry, even on your porch. It is hard to get motivated to drive to the lease and hunt them because the aura and mystique of seeing whitetail deer in the woods is just about gone.

You want my armadillos too?

Enjoy what shows up, but as everyone else said, it's not worth attracting them. Go buy some land in the middle of nowhere and feed all you want. That's what we did.

Yes. I was doing some drilling around pump stations out near Gillette, Wyoming. There were pronghorn and rabbits that liked to hang around the station because the pipes and pumps kept the ground warmer. The antelope would trot away up the hill when we got to the site each morning and then stand up on the hill watching from about 100-150 yards away while we drilled all day. As soon as we left, they were back down among the piping. So they can definitely become used to humans...corn would just help them that much faster I suspect.

Please stop in FBG on your way back home and get the does off my front porch. They're the ones eating the newly planted mums

I've found this is also the best way to attract every raccoon within a 5 mile radius

There have been so many good responses, but I'll just add this, " DONT FEED THE FRIGGIN' DEER!" Like a previous poster, living with them every day all day in my yard destroying everything in my yard, I can't enjoy hunting anymore
