What's the OB consensus (if it exists....) on number of hog panels for deer to be comfortable jumping in? I've heard 8-10 16' panels. I have a serious hog problem, tired of feeding the pigs. Headed to Tractor Supply after work to buy the material.

I've made do with 6 in brushy areas but you are better off going with the 8-10. They say the larger the more comfortable the deer are.

Im in the same boat and your estimate are correct. Just make sure the height is right ..roughly 30 in so the deer can hop in. Ive also read where you can take a few panels and cut the top wire so the fawns can get in as well. Good luck in your project and blast the hogs.

10 and form a circle out of them.
Hogs want to dig under corners and one buck can't hem another in a corner!

I went from a 50' diameter to a 30' and it makes a huge difference. 50' is 10 panels @ 16'. If you have the space go big.

4 of them in a circle. Can't remember the lengths of the 4 though. They were left over from another project. I bet they were 10 foot or so in length.

I'm getting the 34" panels for that reason, and will notch a couple of them down to 28" or so for the smaller deer, just as you suggest. Thanks for the input, will be blasting arrows this weekend. Hoping for bucks, will settle for annihilation of a pig or two.

Not necessary... this is from early July and one fawn cleared the panels (34") plus a strand of barb wire (zoom in just next to doe)

The larger the better and especially if you are using a good spinner plate feeder. Round is good but you will use more t-post or whatever. Also I suggest calling your local Tractor Supply as the two in my area did not carry the 34" size....only the 50". They are only about $3.00 or so more last I checked. I think they sell the 50" x 16" for 21.99. You can cut the 50" in half to make your lower ones for the fawns and save money that way.

Here is what we did

(2) 16' long x 5' tall panel and cut in half
put in circle pushing the cut sides down into the soil
1 strand of barbed wire to keep cows out.

Pros - we've never had issues with hogs or cows
unlimited places to mount a camera

Cons - Harder to fill feeder
No actual gate sucks when you shoot something on the inside.......dad has done it once in the past 20 years and we just undid the wire and drug her out.

I loosely follow the recommendations of Dr. Billy Higginbotham - Texas AgriLife Extension Service (Sept 09, 2009 Chron). Chron fencing

  • Use 3 50"x16' hog panels cut in half using bolt cutters for a ~ 90 ft circle. 3 "T" posts per panel. Do not make it any smaller as studies have shown that the deer will feel crowded.
  • Run a strand of barbed wire along the bottom and top about 26" high to deter burrowing and climbing over. This is still low enough for deer to jump over.
  • Place feeder in middle to keep corn well within fencing. I also don't want to give any extra food or attract the hogs as I have pics of a mature buck being chased off from a smaller pen by a large boar.
  • Set out another feeder just for hog hunting.

I really think y'all are making a much bigger deal about deer jumping over a 34" panel... as my picture above shows, a fawn can clear that fence at 1.5 months old. I really think the size of the pen is more important than the height.

I have pigs that can climb over (yes, climb over - I have watched them on video) 34" panels, granted they're both boars and over 175lbs. I cannot imagine the amount of other hogs that would be able to scale a fence that much lower. Maybe I have some unique swine, I don't know.

I like to form a circle about the size you guys are talking, but then put the feeder right next to the fence. That way some corn goes inside the circle and some out. Perfect deer AND hog hunting set up!

This! 34" is nothing for a deer. I have deer jump a 4' goat wire fence to get into my pasture and then jump in my pen. The axis and black buck won't but the deer do.

Anyone tried woven fence over panels? Tractor supply has 330' for $159. 39" tall and openings go from 3" at the bottoms to 7" at the top; top and bottom are 16ga wire (middle is 12)
