How long do you want to ignore this user?
Just put a hole in the sole of my current cheap pair of slip-on snake boots this week so I am in the market for a nice new pair. Anyone have some recommendations based on the criteria below?

  • waterproof but breatable(this is a must)
  • prefer laceup with zipper or some other easy removal to slip-ons but can go either way
  • snakeproof/bite resistant
  • budget up to a few hundred for them
  • Would like to try any on in person before buying so an in store pair would be preferred to online only but not required

Thanks

Just curious, why the criteria on #1. I can't imagine many places where snake boots must also be waterproof. South Texas is obviously rattlebug country and I would never step out of my cabin without them, but I can count on one hand how many times I've needed waterproof boots in the last 13-14 years.

I really like my Chippewas. I bought mine a half size larger than my normal boot size so that I coud wear an ankle brace or wear 2 pairs of socks when doing a lot of field walking to minimize blisters. They are not hard to slip on or off, and the ankle strap provides a decent amount of stability for my bad ankle.

The lease i am on can get pretty muddy with a little rain and i don't want to have to worry about dodging mud/puddles otw to the blind. Plus i have had to cross a few streams here and there on some day/week hunts.

Get a really good pair of dedicated hunting/hiking boots that check every box in terms of durability and water-proofing. Then as stated, just get a pair of snake chaps or gaiters.

Agree with this. I prefer gaiters though, as chaps sometimes start pulling on the belt too much after a while. I've never found a pair of snake boots that check the "comfort" boxes like dedicated hiking boots.

I got a pair of redhead lace-ups (uninsulated, no zipper) real cheap at bass pro a couple years ago and love those boots. they're almost as soft and comfortable as sneakers, great bowhunting boots. They are not very waterproof and not very breathable, but really, they're cordura and it's texas, you're gonna be soaked in sweat pretty quick anyway. They dry quickly. Looks like they only offer the ones I have with a zipper now (which I think would be less comfortable) but the Redhead Bayou looks similar, but with more some leather

or just get some 18" lacrosse uninsulated and save $100. Are those snake proof? I always assumed they were but maybe I need to research that...

Get a pair of a Chips. They are super comfortable. Mine didn't come with a zipper so I had a shoe place add it on.

All waterproof boots will not be very breathable so you might want to weigh the pros and cons.

Armando's in Raymondville will hand make you a custom pair of snake boots that will fit and feel better than any off the shelf boot you can buy and will damn near last a lifetime.

Spring turkey in NE Texas.

I second the Irish Setter Vaprtrek suggestion. Picked up a pair several months ago and love them. Super comfortable and have been Bone dry. Great all around hunting boot for this part of the world.

Get boots that are comfortable, and wear chaps in snakey areas.

I have worn a pair of Browning lace up side zips waterproof for 7 years, and they just started giving up the ghost. Don't make them anymore, so had to go looking. Also have a pair of Chippewa pull ons for warmer weather, and they are good, but not waterproof.

Just got back from the lease on the inaugural run of my Lacrosse Venom lace up side zip waterproofs. Actually pretty comfortable for what they are, and with a little break in should work nicely. I buy them one size larger than need be and wear thick sox during hunting season and use them as my hunting boots since our lease has some low lying areas requiring some sort of waterproofing if recent rains of more than one inch. The treads in the boot cleared much better than the Browning, but did not experience water enough to test that. Amazon had a great deal on them for $149 a few weeks ago. I am 6-2" and they come up just short of my knee in size 13's. Great coverage.
"Green" is the new RED.
