For all the teal hunters, what is the makeup of your teal decoy spread? A bunch of teal with a few big ducks mixed in? Half teal, half big ducks? Teal only? A bunch of everything? Just a few teal?

This is my second full year with my own blind to set up for and I'm wondering what other folks do for teal season.

Depends on the pond size...

1) as many mojos you have (3-4 dove, 2-3 teal, more if you have them) ... motion is always a plus for early Teal

2) I generally use about 4-5 dozen teal and hold about 2 dozen gadwalls or mallards back in case I need to move. Big ponds I'll go bigger.

3) I really don't think it matters. Some hunts I have been on with other guys it's all big ducks with maybe a dozen teal thrown in.

It doesn't matter. I just throw out a dozen pintail hen decoys and a mojo.

It could be coke cans. If you are in the spot, the teal are coming in.

Curious about the logic of adding big ducks to the spread. Seems unnatural given the migration patterns, right? Admittedly even though I'm a lifelong waterfowler, I haven't spent too many September mornings in a blind...so I could certainly learn some early teal tricks.

All you need are a few teal decoys and a couple of Mojo. Being able to call is more important. But the key is location, location and location.

I think it has more to do with people just having more big duck decoys and/or they don't separate the two.

You should join in on the fun! Mosquitoes, alligators, and the occasional snake hiding in the blind with you. Seriously though it is fun and bluewings are stupid and fun to hunt.

Mojo dove decoys work great. They decoy to the motion of the mojos. Any type of duck decoys are fine to use as well. We hunted in a group of six last year with only two mojo doves in a flooded rice field. Six hunters and a dog on a grown up levee. No blind or duck decoys were needed that morning.

If the teal see birds on the water and some motion from mojos they'll be relaxed enough to come in. I don't think the type of decoy makes much difference.

Bigger decoys show up better. Using hens simulates the colors that the bw teal are in during September.

Don't over think it. Teal are DUMB (thank goodness).

Good feedback. Last year I hunted teal with just a jumble of decoys - no rhyme or reason - and did pretty well, but was curious about everyone else's philosophy.

I second the Mojo spinner decoy. I bought on last year and had 3-4 early teal try to land almost on top of it...so close that I couldn't shoot until they flew away from the Mojo.

You could kill teal with red Folgers coffee cans for decoys. And wearing a Santa suit.

4 to 5 dozen teal dekes, mojos, and a half dozen hen mallards or black duck decoys if your hunting the coast.
