I have better luck with dove with an old 20 ga than I do with a 12 ga. Why does Academy (RR) only have pallets of 12 ga out? Is it because nobody can shoot? Why beat your shoulder up for no reason?

I can shoot 1oz loads from a 12ga with far less recoil than a 20ga and a better pattern.
That said, I hunt Dove with a 28ga. Why the 20ga? Do you love getting your shoulder beat up or are you just that bad of a shot?

Because people are crap shots.
Because 12 gauges are multi purpose and you can hunt more than 1 thing with them...

There are a bunch of 20ga pallets out at my Academy. You can pretty much hunt anything that you hunt with a shotgun using a 12 gauge.
The often-seen 12ga / 1 oz "Game Load" is equivalent to the standard 20 ga load from a few decades back
(and still around, just more common find 20ga / 7/8 oz).
The pecking order used to be:
12ga --1-1/4oz
16ga -- 1-1/8 oz
20ga -- 1 oz
An ounce of #8 is approx 410 pellets, so every 1/8 oz about 50 extra, or less, depending which way you go.
How can it be so easy to miss a dove with 400+ opportunities?

Learn to shoot/practice and buy a .410,,much more enjoyable
Because I don't want to buy another shotgun just so I can beat my chest on a message board. 12 is more versatile and keeps the variety of ammo I need to buy lower
Yep, I can get a limit pretty quick with a .410 and not even worry about breaking the power lines they're sitting on.

I use a youth 20 gauge over under because my wife got pissed at me for buying a nice 20 gauge for my 10 year old daughter. I told her I would use it too.

Technique and gun fit.
The best benefit of smaller gauges is less damage to bird. It doesn't really prove ur a better marksman than the avg sgotgun shooter. Unless your out there shooting straight 100's in the field.

I hunt with a pass down gun. The gun is a 12. So I shoot 12.
Underrated strategy. I hunt with a guy who let's just say enjoys the beer. By Sunday morning of a weekend hunt he throws a full choke on and shoots only birds that land in trees out in front of him...he drinks bloodys and just trims the trees and powerlines allegedly.

if your holding the gun properly you shouldnt be getting a beat up shoulder. that being said i was much more comfortable and confident with my old 20 gauge before it got stolen.
