I have an acre and a half new construction house. Of course, Johnson grass everywhere.

What is the most effective way to treat it?
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

Roundup

Anything other than the Johnson grass you don't want to kill?

Nuke it with Roundup and start over.

Well, I'd rather not kill all the other grass, as it'd be a pain in the ass to re-seed.

Build a cheap wick applicator. Cut everything down to about 6", then wait 10 days. Johnsongrass will be tallest studd out there.

What do you means stud out?

OP you have a war on your hands. That grass is a burn the house down problem. Regular strength Roundup will kill what you can see. But depending on how extensive the root system it might not kill the entire root. JG only needs an inch of live root to regrow.

I would take concentrated RU and manually apply to the grass by hand. Good luck

So, essentially, I'm going to have Johnson grass for a while. Oh well.

Ummm 24 years and counting. But my back fence has a 2 foot city easement and drainage ditch behind it. It is hard to control that sliver of land if grows there it moves into my yard.

I have some super death spray I use to control the easement every spring. Edit and it's a mass death spray that can anything including hackberry trees. It is not selective

Try round up for lawns

It doesn't kill "good" grass but i think it kills johnson grass
The Aggie number specified has already been linked with another TexAgs account.

Been battling Johnson grass on my place for a couple years now. Go to tractor supply and buy the concentrated glyphosate (roundup main ingredient) and a pump sprayer and mix yourself.

Man you guys kill me. Frequent mowing will kill most of it. Get on any kind of preemergent plan and that will certainly do it. It's really one of the easier weeds to keep out of maintained turf.

Ok. I've sprayed plants in the past durIng my national park internship, but we never treated Johnson grass.

OP, what is your good grass your trying to establish? Assuming since you mentioned seeding, it's bermudagrass. If thats the case, here is your solution: Certainty. One app this year followed by two-three applications next year as needed. Fertilize and mow your desired turf as necessary, and it should outcompete the j-grass in future years.
I think I need to figure out a way to open a Texags herbicide shop.

Well, I don't know what the hell grass the builders planted. It looks like Kentucky bluegrass, which is pretty common around here. I'll probably overseed with whatever my landscaping friend recommends for around here ( he'll give me his rate).

The back acre is just Johnson grass and a variety of native plants (old farm land) that I've since mowed over.

Are you sure it's Johnson grass?

In that case, bomb the back acre and start from scratch with your grass of choice

Wonder how in the world Minnesota has managed to avoid the weed:

Well, I'll use about 1/4 acre of it for a garden. Other than that, I'll keep it maintained like a lawn.

Regular mowing should control it.

Concerning hay production how much is too much for a bale. A lot of old timers here do not seem to care too much about it if not to stemmy.

Roundup and time. Johnsongrass thrives on soil disturbance. It hates competition. Spray now, plant permanent grass, spray a little later, and it will fade away.
