We have an airline trip coming up this weekend in which we need to keep some fish frozen for about 12 hours. Is Yeti Ice that much better than regular ice to justify spending $30 on it?

We have always used dry ice for fish, especially for 12 hrs!

My experience shipping gw samples was if the ice melted and leaked out of the cooler, most of the times they'd throw it out. So, using the Yeti ice, or a similar product since they aren't the only option on that front, may be safer from that front. Also a plus, you get to reuse it. I have a similar product I like putting in the bottom of my cooler before putting in ice and it really helps keep the ice cold.

depends on where the layovers are and how long (it's pretty cold at 30,000ft). We flew from Sitka, AK to Houston last july (including a long layover in Seattle) with 50lbs of salmon and halibut and it was fine in the waxed cardboard box the processor provided, they delivered it to the airport frozen solid the morning of our flight. In my opinion ice/dry ice/coolers are only necessary for shipping meat via ground carriers

I use a gallon milk jug with frozen salt water to keep the ice/fresh water solution in my cheapo cooler colder longer. Ice will actually form on the outside of the jug. Seems to be the same principle as the Yeti ice...Not sure how that translates to air transport though.

We just freeze the fish and keep it on ice until we get to the airport. Upon arrival we remove all the ice and duct tape the cooler shut. Frozen fish will easily last an extended period of time like that.

Yeti I've are essentially just their ice packs that you freeze and then stick in your cooler.

I don't know, but it's $125 for a 5 lb. bag.

I actually like juice bottles instead, the 64 oz, rectangular shaped bottles.

Another is the Polar Packs that come in styrofoam boxes midicine is shipped in. Flat and easily configured. Usually get for free from the Dr office if I ask.
