My wife and I just moved into our first home. My first project was garage floor epoxy, which looks great, but now I need to tackle storage. What do the great minds in the OB use for their personal garage storage systems?

**Bonus points for bicycle storage ideas.

based one the fact that you epoxied the floor this may not be the look you are going for but i basically have a random of storage. I've got salvaged cabinets that i tore our of our kitchen hung on one wall, some floor standing 2x4 shelves, some cantilevered 2x4 shelves that hang out over my truck bed, some peg board, and i made hanging racks for lawn implements by drilling holes in 2x4s and stuck in some scrap rebar i had laying around. i'll post some pictures when i get home. my system is erratic but effective, and most importantly cheap.

edit:
for the bikes, depending on how much space you have and how much you use the bikes i personally would go with something like this:
https://www.amazon.com/flat-bike-lift-overhead-store-garage-ceiling/dp/B00MJ26IS0
or the cheaper DIY version of it

I use these for bikes. Cheap and effective, and really easy to use for everyone.

I hang bikes upside down on the ceiling by the wheels. Really helps to have 11' ceilings. The rest is a random assortment of 2x4 scrap wood shelves and wall hanging tools. I would love to have all my storage in built in cabinets with drawers and doors but I don't don't have the time. I would best describe my garage as organized chaos. I can find everything but none of it really makes sense.

Currently building a shed in the backyard to move all my yard tools and stuff I don't use much, (generator, power washer, etc)

instead of the vertical 2x's they used 1x's so the boxes were closer to the ceiling. I thought it was pretty creative.

6 of these and some lumber and you are in business for $150.

Use clear bins if at all possible. Nothing more irritating than opening six different tubs to find the one item you need. Yeah yeah, I know you are gonna label each bin and only put the right stuff in the bin, but there are a lot of items that are multi category and overlap. Clear tubs is what I am advocating.

Very nice. I have been trying to think of a way to utilize the space above the garage door.

This is just my opinion of course but I would not keep a decent bicycle or other corrodible equipment in my garage in South Texas unless that garage has air conditioning. The humidity will rust chains and other parts in no time. My golf clubs, fishing equipment and bicycles are all in an a spare bedroom. I put a dehumidifier in the garage for the things I have to keep out there like tools, etc.

Safe Racks 4'x8' grids over the garage doors. You can catch them on sale at Costco from time to time. If you are relatively handy around the house you should be able to do an install in a couple of hours.

We have a 3 car garage that has 2 rows of 1' x 4' fluorescent fixtures, one row is over the garage doors when they're open, so that eliminates any storage above the doors. The attic space is decked with 3/4" plywood, so I am planning on putting all of my wife's Christmas/fall/Easter decorations that are in bins up there.

I have plans for a large work bench, but still need to get a roll-a-way tool chest, and some shelving of some type to keep coolers, gas cans, and other commonly used items up off the floor.

Any opinions on pegboard?

Ohh, and the beer fridge is already in place and fully stocked.

We have a wall with pegboard and I recommend it. It is an efficient way to keep a lot of items, all while not having shelves, etc. that take up space. Also very easy to find anything that is on it. Obviously, it doesn't work for everything, but I think it is a good to use as one part of a multiple option approach.

The ability to hang a lot of odd-shaped items and also to get anything you store there to be flush to the wall has a lot of value.

Bike hooks from homedepot. Only works if you have 9 to 10' ceilings. My Ford Edge fit under these at the time.

The garage I have now is lower, but we have the bikes over the 3rd bay and one in between the cars. 5 bikes hanging now.

I'd get some of the wall mounts for bikes or normal hooks from the ceiling for the tires/seat.

Do not, I repeat... DO NOT go to garagejournal.com

You may never return after getting sucked into that black hole of garage organization, tools you never knew you needed, and general man cave awesomeness.

Or do go, but prepare your wallet - it's basically the OB for garages and sheds.

As promised here is my cobbled together storage:

As you may be able to tell, the key to my system is generally use the junk I have laying around to make storage solutions.

Pretty much mine as well. It's all about budget. I slapped mine together with three babies and just me getting a paycheck. Will take a few pics.

Bike and wheel barrow hooks

Shelves cheap. Used stud finder for braces

Peg board. Really like this

Tell me more on your experience for the epoxy floor. Have been talking about doing it and after building the shed... there is currently temporary room :-) to do the floor.

Do it. It was a weekend worth of work, but I would do it again in a heart beat. It hasn't been down long enough for me to be able to say anything about its durability, but it looks fantastic.

I used the Rustolium EpoxyShield you can get at Lowe's or Home Depot. The prep work is the biggest part. Most garage floors have a sealant of some type that you have to get off. The Epoxy Shield kit comes with an acid wash that etches the concrete surface so the epoxy can bond to it.

Friday night I pressure washed the garage floor, used de-greaser and a scrub brush on oil stains, rinsed the floor, acid washed and brushed the floor with a stiff bristle brush, then pressure washed the floor again. Saturday morning, there was a residue on the floor from the acid wash, so I pressure washed it again, let it dry all day and all night. Sunday morning I rolled on the epoxy coating. The epoxy sets up quicker in hot temperatures, so being in Houston in June, I had to apply the material early in the morning so it wouldn't set up while in the bucket.

I am planning on putting a fresh coat of light grey pain on the walls to clean them up this weekend, then the garage storage and organization begins. I have an original saw 'em off flag (pre skull patch,) a come and take it flag, a Block ATM with the state outline, and 4'x10' Beretta banner to hang on the walls for decoration.

Here's mine. Still a work in progress, I'm doing the first major cleanout basically ever since we moved in. The last time my place was organized was 11 years or 3 moves ago. I've thrown out and donated a crazy amount of stuff!

The long term goal is to get rid of the overhead trusses, add closed cell foam, tile flooring, A/C, and a lift or two. Should be a 5 car garage by the time I'm done!

edit: I'll spin the camera around later today to get a picture of actual organization. After work I'm going to start on an oil spill (changed oil, found out later the container leaked), organizing trim for our house, get the F-100 on the trickle charger, and a bunch of other things. The best part about working out here is that from each day to the next it's a huge change!

I have a large free standing cabinet, workbench, and some misc wallhanger stuff for tools. I really like the Gladiator design, but it wasn't cheap.

Well, you were right, I did what you said not to and went down the garage journal rabbit hole. Found something that piqued my interest:

Don't do that. Go this route and get your stuff down while standing on the ground.
