Just bought a BGE. They had a mini-torch in the store that you attached one of those small camping propane tanks to and could use to fire up your coals. They were selling it for around $53. I have been looking on amazon and can only find the backpack torches for burning down cacti (and for use by moron tu coaches). Anyone use this method and know of a better torch?

Not to hijack the thread, but I have a MAP torch and - I know, I'm a moron - can't figure out how to use it to get the coals lit. Seems like I hold it on the charcoal for 30-45 seconds, and it never really gets going. Do I just do it longer or what?

You can find these at Lowe's, Home Depot, and Wal-Mart...I've used several different torches over the years, starting using these a couple of years ago and haven't looked back

My looftlighter broke this year.

I have resorted to balled up newspaper with a little cooking oil sprayed on.

Hold it on one or two spots for 20-30 seconds a piece and then leave the lid open for a few minutes. You may want to make a little hole in the charcoal and light a lower layer and then cover with the tillings. It'll get going.

I've been using this one for a year and still have gas in the cylinder.

I have been using this one for 6-7 years now and it makes lighting the BGE easy & fun. I would highly recommend some form of eyewear when using it as the lump can really spark.

I use one that looks similar, but uses the blue bottle. I also use one stick, or a half stick of fat wood. Seems to make lighting easier and not have to run the torch as long. The fat wood is cheap and it seems like the 'fat' burns off quickly.

I'm slightly embarrassed to ask, but am I the only one that uses a traditional charcoal chimney? A little balled up newspaper underneath and a firestarter cube inside the chimney, under the charcoal. Light the paper, come back in 20 and its ready to dump.

Paper towels and bacon grease here

I've used this for years. It's the cat's meow. Anything else is subpar.

I use the little squares. They work great. What is y'alls' problem? You do have the aftermarket grid that goes under the coals? 20-30 min and I'm ready for whatever temp I need with one square.

When grilling, I use a chimney and paper towel with a little cooking oil to light the lump. For low & slow cooks I light in 2 spots w/ a propoane torch directly in the grill.

Tried that, too impatient. I prefer my 100K btu torch.

Chimney user here too. Newspaper and a fireplace lightet. I'm lazy and cheap. Works whether I want a big hot fire or one for low and slow.

I like the chimney a lot and use the little square things under it to get it started. What I really like about it is that after I use the BGE I kill the fire immediately and then next time scoop up the left over charcoal and put it in the chimney for the next time.

Ever since I ran out of the starter squares they gave me when I bought my BGE 5 years ago I've been using this electric starter ... $10 at Academy and I'm probably at around 500 lights with it ...

I use the Harbor Freight Propane Torch. It's a superior method to lighting the grill. You're up and running in no time.

I use this as well. I put it in the coals and come back in 5 minutes to a good fire. Works as good as the looftlighter for 1/5th the cost.

I use a Mapp torch and it works great. Another method i used in the past was rolling up a paper towel and soaking it in vegetable oil. Bury under some lump and light it up. Works well.

Looftlighter is the way to go IMO. It's also fun when lighting regular ol charcoal because when you pull the lighter away, it's like your charcoal spontaneously combusts.

This is the way to go. The only way I have used on my Weber Smokey Mountain. I don't use any cubes though, just paper and charcoal.

I use the little Weber squares. I have the big Harbor Freight propane torch, but I've never used it because the squares are so easy.

Thank you TexAgs for helping me spend money on fun stuff I don't need!

Bought this for its intended purpose actually. I will let you know what my neighbors think if I ever burn down my backyard. The wife likes to kill weeds and usually uses a backpack pump sprayer so I got her this in case she wants to flame away.

I may use it in the fall to light a fire or two but for charcoal, I will still just use the chimney and a small piece of fire starter.
