Trying to mix up some cerakote to cover pelican cases - what mixtures have yall had luck with in terms of an Aggie maroon?

I spent a long time developing my color so I don't give the exact ratios to anyone. I will tell you that you need a red, a blue, and a black.

If you are a pro and selling your mix, I get that you don't give it away.
If not, I can't think of a more miserable stance than you needing everyone else to have to go through the grief just because you did.
Why bother replying to tell him you know how to make it but won't give it to anyone? Telling him 3 basic colors is about as useful as telling someone your chili recipe has meat, tomatoes, and peppers.skelso said:

Obviously not a small business owner.1990AG said:

Y'all are reading my reply all wrong... read any other thread I have responded to on the OB and you'll see I generally try to be helpful. That is what I am trying to do here but I'm guessing I should have just scrolled past and left him to wonder...
While I will not give up my exact ratios, I am trying to point him in the right direction. From there he has to experiment to find the ratio right for him. If he's using c series, my ratios probably won't give the desired outcome anyway. How he preps the surface will make a difference as well. Is he scuffing with scotchbright pad or sand blasting? Is he laying down a base coat, or spraying directly on top of the color of the case? If the latter, what color is the polymer, yellow, black, tan, etc. These are all factors that influence the final outcome.
When I started, I was left to guess what base colors to use and I kept ending up with a rust brown color. That was until I realized blue and red make purple and black deepens it.
So, this is why I didn't reply on this one. We have a custom maroon mix that we do, as well, and I won't release it either. And, yeah, kelso is a gunsmith and does cerakote. I know he's already responded to this but I wanted to jump in as well. Also, simply mentioning the base colors used is actually a bigger deal than you would think. Maroon isn't an easy color to replicate so those of us that have one do keep it pretty close to the vest. But to call Kelso out on this isn't cool. In some regards he is a competitor to me, so when I jump on here to back him up, I hope that means a bit more than it normally would. I think we would both agree that we have a pretty good working relationship outside, in spite of that (our base business models are very divergent so that helps, but even then, that doesn't really matter on my end anyways. We've both called each other up for help on stuff and I'm more than happy to help him out). I will say that our mix does run the same three base colors and that the black is actually a pretty important part that most don't even think about when mixing, so him mentioning that is actually him being very helpful.burtonsnow said:Why bother replying to tell him you know how to make it but won't give it to anyone? Also, I know I replied to your response, but that wasn't just aimed at you, couple other posts that I was lumping in with that. Your's was just the one under the mouse at the time.burtonsnow said:skelso said:

Thanks for clearing it up a bit. This sounds like it would just be easier for OP to just pay someone who already knows how to do it to save himself from a lot of frustration.

I wouldn't want someone's chili recipe that uses tomatoes, so....

But you do want a recipe that doubles up on beans... no? ;D
