That kid was perfectly calm! Kudos to him. Even with that small of a bear, my adrenaline would be going.

Kid must have had a slim Jim in his pocket.

Must be calm genetics in the family... I'd be too jumpy to film if that was my son.

The bear was hoping the kid would move. That looked like a nice spot to sit and not have to hang on to the tree.

Maybe it was the fresh pile of poo in the kids pants that scared the bear away

Not very dangerous. Sub-adult. Note the ears and lip. There is no sign of aggression. Once they leave the ground, there is basically no fight or aggressive beyond popping their jaws at you. I have watched them go out of their way to avoid landing on someone multiple times. Honestly, after the first few times working one, I thought nothing of wacking them on the butt to run them back up a tree.

Like I have said, your greatest chance of being injured by a black bear is sleeping in an area they have been feeding.

Spoken by someone who doesn't have a teenager.

Oh, you mean the bear.

Would it be a different story if the momma bear was with it or have they already gone their separate ways by that age?

Physical defense of cubs isn't really a behavior of black bears, that is a pretty strong misconception. They will put on one hell of a show, but that is about it. Some researchers now day won't even sedate mama while working up cubs. Keep an eye on her, and stomp your foot when she approaches.

We have a hanger in one of my State Parks (we have lots of sitings and two physical encounters last year) thats causing grief. First it was tent campers trying to get their food which was appropriately stored. Then it moved on to the park managers house. The park managers big anotolian was giving it hell so he went out to check it.

He went out with his .40 a flashlight, and one of his daughters softballs. He told me a softball was essentially a walk to first base.

Said the bear which was about 300 pounder looked at him, and just walked away. Paint ball and slugs just seem to discourage it, and none of our conservation officers have been close enough to put the barbless taser into it.

Dang thing is trying to roll the bear proof dumpsrers like a circus bear.

This was last week. Spoken to Park Manager again yesterday and it appears to be the same bear visiting some homes around the park. Now home owners are expecting something to be done. Our game and fish bear bio is ready to take it to next level, which should be a fairly easy harvest.

I'd like to see this in person, just to see what the experience is like.

Some don't like it, but I am a fan of bear spray as a deterrent (some say defense only). I never had to spray one twice. Rubber slugs are nice, but short lived impact for larger males........I would lose no sleep putting that one down.

I should add that's after they are out of the den. In the den is a little too close proximity to do that.
