I have watched them go out of their way to avoid landing on someone multiple times. Honestly, after the first few times working one, I thought nothing of wacking them on the butt to run them back up a tree.
Like I have said, your greatest chance of being injured by a black bear is sleeping in an area they have been feeding.

Physical defense of cubs isn't really a behavior of black bears, that is a pretty strong misconception. They will put on one hell of a show, but that is about it. Some researchers now day won't even sedate mama while working up cubs. Keep an eye on her, and stomp your foot when she approaches.
