Who Leaves Their Grill Outside?

I got rid of my old charcoal grill from college yesterday (rusty and falling apart) and am looking at getting something else.

I had been looking into a Char-Broil Kamander, mainly attracted to it's high potential temps (800 degrees) for reverse searing, but also liking it's versatility and of course the price point compared to other Kamado grills.

Only problem is, my front porch is the only covered area I have, and at over 100lbs I don't want to be carrying the Kamander up and down a couple steps to take it to the front yard every time I want to grill/smoke. The backyard would be the best place to use it, but I don't have a covered area.

I can buy the grill cover for it, which has decent reviews, but I've also read that in humid areas it's not a good idea to use a grill cover because moisture can collect and not have a chance to evaporate, leading to rusting. I just wanted to see who keeps a grill outdoors, and do you cover or leave uncovered?

I may have to opt for a simple Weber Kettle (so I can store it under the front porch and carry the the front yard to use) until I have a better place to store something as heavy as the Kamander.

All you really need is a cast iron skillet and an oven. You can cook steaks and bbq with both.

Outside, in a grill cover. But I'm in a dry environment (North/West Texas).

My biggest problem is the damn wind will blow it over when thunderstorms roll in.

There was a time where I didn't take very good care of my grill and I have some rust issues because I left it out in the rain too long, too often. I've kept my grill covered for the past 4-5 years and have seen no additional spread of the rusted areas. I also use my grill weekly at least so it's uncovered at least once a week, once every two weeks minimum.

Only had my Weber for about 6 weeks but I leave it outside uncovered but roll back and forth under a covered patio. I had a charboil that I felt like rusted more quickly than it should have and I kept it covered. I'm in a humid environment on the coast

I leave my Weber gas grill uncovered
It gets direct rain and sun.
After a couple of years there isn't one spot of rust on it.

I used to cover my grills and had problems with rust.
I believe the covers allow moisture to stay trapped inside longer and cause issues whereas if they are uncovered, they dry quicker with air circulation and sunlight.

The outside finish on the Weber is like a car. A car doesn't rust in the rain and neither do the Webers.
I can not speak for Char-Broil though.

Live in humid ass Houston. I have a Weber Summit Series that lives outside, is about 6 years old and doesn't have a spec of rust on it, but I keep it covered at all times when it's not being used.

We had a Weber Charcoal grill that faced snow up north and the humidity of the south. The only issue on the outside we had was the wooden handle eventually gave out, but we had that grill for almost 20 years and it got used a lot. Never covered it.

I have the Vision ceramic and I keep it up next to the house, but not under the patio cover. I bought a cover for it off amazon and I haven't had any issues at all. No rust to speak of, and you can see Clear Lake from my back yard. I don't remember the name of the brand I bought, but it had good ratings and has lasted 3 years now.

I have had a Weber Genesis that I've kept outside for almost a decade. I keep it on a covered porch, and also keep a cover over it. I've gone through several covers that have torn, but the Weber is still going.

i have a weber kettle that i leave uncovered but it sits under a porch when not in use. Sometimes it gets put into the garage if i happen to roll it around to the front yard and grill there.

My smoker is up on heavy huge ass stones and that ho ain't moving.

Keep my gas grill and my BGE outside not covered by structure but both have canvas covers and have been fine. I live on the coast too-- havent had any rust issues...

I run a Big Joe. I keep it covered outside on an uncovered patio in Houston and no rust on the metal components yet.

My last 3 grills rusted all to **** because I kept them on my deck or on my uncovered patio with no cover on them. I finally wised up and now I keep my current grill on the uncovered part of my patio but the grill is in a black cover I got from Amazon. I've had it almost 3 years and its currently rust free. Greasy, yes. Rusty, no.

I have the Acorn by Chargriller. I think it is about the same thing. Steel double wall kamado style. I keep it outside covered and it has been mostly rust free going on 3 years. I say mostly because i will leave it uncovered after a cook to let it cool down and it will always rain that night. It also floated around my backyard in harvey. Still works great.

Smoker gets sandpaper and touch up paint every now and again. More important to keep the inside seasoned and the ash cleaned out.

I had a cheap gas grill last 6 years under a cover. I sold it and keep my Weber under the same cover.

UDS is uncovered under a sill and covered in rust. Inside stays seasoned as long as it sees use.

Key is they all need to be used every now and again. Cleaned and loved

Covered, outside stainless Napoleon LEX 485. It lives under a covered patio and like others, have it uncovered at least once a week.

Just put a cover on it and trim the cover so it is several inches off the ground. that'll be more than enough to get air flow under it.

If you get a cover, spend some coin to get a good one. I went through 2 flimsy vinyl Weber covers in 2 seasons - those are junk.

So you're just going to run in here, lob that grenade, and run TF away?

I would never recommend a grill cover in a hot and humid area, like most areas in Texas. Instead, leave it uncovered and try to position it such that it's out of the direct sun. Or partially cover it so that it can breathe. That's what I do with a small tarp material and magnets.
cr

Buy a small cheap tarp from Harbor Freight, and a tarp grommet kit. Cut the tarp to size, then fold edges and grommet it so it doesn't unravel. Then use that as your cover with magnets to keep it down.

I've had a Weber genesis for 5 years. Keep it covered. No rust. Cover hs a mesh section toward bottom to breathe. Live in central Texas.

But a quality grill. And rust isn't an issue

I have left my Weber Genesis outside for 15 years. It's fine. I also keep my balls between my legs.

Weber Genesis has been outside for 6+ years, in & out of cover, worked-it almost daily. The exterior is rust-free. I have gone through 2 sets of plates & drip guards. I think I'm on my 2nd cover. There are a few issues with Weber, but they are really strong on grill finishes & steel weight.
