We live in a semi-rural subdivision 25 miles east of downtown Dallas. Home sites are 1.75-2.5 acres. Houses are 100-150' apart. So my neighbor has installed led panel flood lights that he leaves on all night. 2 of these are directed out towards my house. They light up our bedroom, bathroom and my son's room pretty well even through 2 " wooden blinds.It is not like a spotlight, but more like a car's headlights from a couple hundred feet.

I realize that if wanted darkness and seclusion I should have moved further out and bought more land. We are in the county so no city statutes are in effect. Anyone have any ideas that will not set off world war III. I have already started texting him when the lights come on in the middle of the night.

You definitely need to tear down your fence.

You could start by knocking on his door and talking to him....like a neighbor.

I once had a floodlight that was pointed a little too high and cast a bright beam over the fence and into my neighbor's back yard. My wife leaves the darn thing on all the time.

One evening, the neighbor came over and told me that he and his wife wanted to have a nice romantic evening in their hot tub and asked that I turn off the light. Nauseated by the thought of the two of them going at it in the hot tub, I composed myself long enough to offer a "sure, no problem, sorry about that" response and then turned off the light.

The next day, I climbed up and adjusted it.

Go talk to your neighbor and express your concerns politely.

If that doesn't work, buy a BB gun.

Set up some solar panels, have him pay for your electric use after the sun clocks out for the day.

Walk around naked in the yard at night. He will eventually turn off the light.

Then again he may shoot you with a bb gun. Let us know

This thread seems very familiar to one a little while back.

My in-laws went through a similar situation. They live on 5 acres outside of Lufkin city limits. They removed the absolute minimum amount of trees to get their log home built. It was a beautiful wooded experience. The lot next to them went unsold for a long time, which they regret not buying.

A retired police office eventually bought the lot. First thing he did was clear cut it. Then he attempted to surround the entire lot with a barb wire fence. My in-laws voiced opposition to that so he put a wood rail fence on their side. He also placed multiple floodlights on tall poles to light up his entire yard. I'm not kidding, the place looks like a football stadium at night. They complained about that as well, but all he did was adjust the lights a little away from them. Even so, it has totally ruined my in-laws "live in the woods" vibe.

And why did he do all of that, you ask? He's paranoid about being robbed. No joke.

BB gun won't do it. You will need a .22. A .22 will reach and disable the light. I have done this MULTIPLE times....not as an adult...but still. I know these things having grown up in a rural area with an over abundance of 'security' lighting.

A large concave parabolic mirror, whose focal point is approximately placed on his house should do the trick.

We've done this thread before but maybe that was the RE board.

Real responses, in order of cheapest to to biggest ass pain:
Screening, bigger fence and/or vegetation.
HOA involvement, if it exists.
Deed restrictions, if they exist. This is a district court action.
Nuisance law. This is an expensive district court action.

But first, tear down your fence and brew a lot of tea.

This reminds me, I have to go talk to a neighbor about leaving their constant barking yip dog out all night.

Buy a couple 3 or 4 sheets of foil backed OSB. Install with shiny side towards the neighbor's house.

1. This is cheap and temporary
2. It looks like crap, which will surely bother them to no end
3. It reflects light back to them while blocking it to you

The only other thing you need is patience. And possibly setting an old toilet up over there, just because.
