I want to buy a bottle of whiskey for a friend. He isn't a whiskey aficionado, by any means. I know for sure he would enjoy the smoothest thing I can find. I would greatly prefer if it were a Texas whiskey. It would just make the gift more special.

I know next to nothing about liquor. I know last fall I had the first I ever truly enjoyed- it was perfectly smooth with zero burn. It could have just been that this was a celebratory drink after an absolutely grueling sheep hunt... I don't remember what he told me it was, but it was scotch I seem to recal. The buddy who this flask belonged to is who I am trying to buy a bottle for- if that helps you make a reccomedation.

So- all knowing OB- what say you? Smoothest whiskey from Texas? I've been told Rebecca Creek and Troubador, but I've never had either.

They all suck. Get him some EH Taylor small batch and call it a day.

I'm partial to Yellow Rose. It's nothing super outstanding, but it's pretty solid for the price.

Whistle Pig. It's a rye. Not from Tx. You and your buddy will thank me.

The best Texas whiskey is Balcones Single Malt.

Well I sure didn't take long for the anti-Texas Whiskey guys to show up...

I'm a fan of Balcones Blue... And Ranger Creek .36...

This is the order of my personal favorites. Please ignore the "whiskey experts", it's like telling Yeti guys that RITC is just as good, or Glock guys that there actually are other handguns out there.

TX Bourbon
Rio Brazos
Rebecca Creek
Balcones
TX Whiskey

Of course there are plenty of better options, but this is my Texas list and honestly I've become pretty fond of TX Bourbon.

George Dickel is a Tennessee whiskey but it beats the hell out of any other whiskey in
Texas I've consumed. Smoothest I've had. Jamesons is also very smooth and rates right up there in smoothness.

Firestone and Robertson TX Whiskey tastes very smooth to me. Distilled in Fort Worth, TX.

TX whiskey (blended, not bourbon) is what you want. It's low proof, sweet, very smooth and easy drinking. People who have been drinking bourbon for a while will scoff at it but people like your friend who don't consider themselves whiskey aficionados will enjoy it for the reasons mentioned above.

In college i had a George dickel shirt. The looks and questions i got made it entertaining to wear.

Just like Texas wines, Texas whiskey will not stand up to whiskeys from other parts of the US. The best Texas whiskey is Whitmeyers from the distillery. The stuff at the store is sourced juice but the stuff at the distillery if theirs and good

What Cactus Thomas said...... key word "blended"...... I don't drink much hard liquor but I have definitely noticed the blended ones are smoother to me.

Just noticed Bevokilla's post and looked up Whitmeyers. Guess what.... it's a blend.

I find Balcones Baby Blue to be agreeable.
I have not had many other Texas spirits.

As you sip, proof it down with a few drops of good drinking water until you taste something you like or the burn has settled down. Even throw a piece of ice in at first until you acclimate yourself to the burn.

Andalusia Stryker.
It's a new distillery in Blanco. Unfortunately you'll have to go to the distillery to get it. I think there are some stores in Austin that carry it though.

But how is the Andalusia? Have drove by it and does not look like much. And good luck finding any eh taylor. Great stuff stumbled on by accident and next time I went to get a bottle....$20 more. Can't even find now.

That Andalusia may have the worst website I've ever seen. I bet hipsters love that. Looks like they are only making scotch style whiskey.

TX Whiskey

Of course there are plenty of better options, but this is my Texas list and honestly I've become pretty fond of TX Bourbon.

Texas Bourbon Whiskey and Boxcar Whiskey from Rio Brazos Distillery are pretty good and made in Aggieland.

Rebecca Creek is decent and made by Aggies.

TX Whiskey and TX Bourbon from Firestone and Robertson are also pretty good.

Texas Bourbon Whiskey from Fire Oak Distillery in Liberty Hill is also pretty solid (and I believe the owner of the distillery is an Ag).

Not a fan of Garrison Brothers Bourbon and not a big fan of the Balcones whiskeys (had the single malt and baby blue). Taste like shoe leather to me - maybe it's the blue corn (since it appears to be common ingredient). Bone Bourbon (made in Bastrop) is not good either, imo.

I may have to try the Yellow Rose and Whitmeyer (if I can find it)...

Yes it is, why do you say that? Because it is blended with other spirits?

I don't understand the fascination with Texas whiskey and bourbon. For $25 you can get something better from Tennessee or Kentucky

It is 75% neutral spirits.

Supporting Texas based companies. No one is saying they are superior, but it doesn't hurt to buy something made here in Texas. I don't understand why whiskey snobs always pull this crap when the OP specifically asks for a Texas whiskey.

Because they would rather someone get something good for less money?

So Texas whiskeys are not good? Come on now.

The guy in Brazos County who was on the news opposing box stores being able to sell hard liquor said it would work against him in a major way. None of the box stores would carry his brand. Why? Because it is not nearly as good as many others. I had two bottles gifted to me but it is much more harsh than non-local whiskeys.
