Guys,

I don't come here often. I'm back and forth around Kerrville/Fredericksburg a lot and have had no luck fishing around the area. I'm not looking to catch big fish, just catch something in a creek or river within an hour drive. I won't tell a soul about your fishing spot, and I'm just looking for a place to go a few times a year and get a line wet without having to take out a boat or use anything other than a kayak to get to the best spot. Any help would be greatly appreciated and a case/bottle of your favorite adult beverage would be gladly donated for your participation. DM me or email me gearly876@yahoo.com if you can help a fellow Ag out. Thanks!

The Blanco about a mile and a half upriver from Five Mile Dam was pretty good back when I lived over there. That was before Austin and San Antonio really started growing though, so there's no telling how it is now. It could all be developed land now.

It's the first big low water crossing up from the dam, the west side of the dammed up area it makes will be the deep side and the east side gets shallow. Farther up the bend in the river it stays calm and deep (for the Blanco anyway) until you reach a long stretch of shallows and the trees start closing in and you're more likely to snag a tree or snake than anything.

It's all very easy canoeing. Trees could be gone by now, I haven't been back since at least a Biblical flood or two ago.

Get yourself a copy of 'Fly Fishing the Texas Hill Country' by Hutchison. Do not need to Fly Fish to use this book. It is the most detailed and complete listing of every fishing spot, how to get there even down to where to park that exists for the Hill Country.

Any advice on where to purchase that book? Copies on Amazon are $94 (!!) used.

Are you a Hays kid or a San Marcos kid?

San Marcos, I grew up in the hills a couple of miles from the Comal County line. The area between RR12, 302, and Hunter Road was my playground, but I liked getting out on the Blanco more than any of the other rivers in the area. Most of the time I wouldn't see anyone else out there the whole day.

Super,
If you want a little longer trip. Go to Junction. Put Kayak in under the big bridge in town. Not the one on the Interstate. You actually be on the South Llano. Go upstream.....good fishing with light tackle for big Rio Grande Perch, Guadalupe Bass, Catfish and Black Bass.

There are no fish in the Pedernales. Just steer clear of there. Especially near das felsa west of Stonewall.

Blanco SP, Pedernales Falls SP, Reimer's, Colorado Bend SP, below Canyon, below Buchanan, the Slab on the Llano, the Steps on the San Gabriel. To name a few places that produce without need for a boat.
