Uh.... I've only taken the IED Awareness course but I'm pretty sure that's what they taught us NOT to do...

Sorry folks are having to deal with this - hopefully the perp is caught or stopped soon.

If I were planting bombs, I would keep targeting the poorer areas.

Those areas are:
1. Less likely to surveillance systems
2. Those neighborhoods are more likely to have strangers coming and going
3. Less likely to call the cops

However, FedEx has many drop boxes, like the postal service does, you can drop anonymously.

Warning: You've now been added to the our watchlist. Good luck flying out on your next vacation.

I have medical devices that prevent me from going through the body scanners. My flight last month resulted in a TSA screening that was more invasive than the colonoscopy a few weeks later.

"If this explosion was the result of a bomb using trip wire technology, that is showing a different level of skill above that we were already concerned that this suspect or suspects may possess," Austin Police Chief Brian Manley told ABC's "Good Morning America" on Monday.

Trip wire technology? Come'on chief. Stop using cop-speak BS for a second and get with the program.

Pisses me off when cops suddenly transform into some crazy robot-speak like its far more complicated than an average civilian will understand.

They got a class on this at the academy or something?

I saw Return of the Jedi in back in 86. Ewoks were using that **** all the way back then.

There are a greater than average number of morons amongst the cop population. The percentages increase as you go up the food chain.

These are the same types of bombs you see in the Middle East with similar mechanisms. These are by Def. IED's.

And now I'm even more sure this is just a ******** testing and fine tuning for a big finish. He's not going to go for poorer areas. He's branching out. He will be hitting higher profile types next...

Local BS bombs -> local reliable bombs-> local bombs with tripwires (additional technology and detail) -> now he's expanding to other cities and gaining notoriety.

As soon as we get a nickname assigned to him, things will get bumped up a notch.

This ******** is learning as he goes and as long as the cops stay one step behind, he will learn from them too.

Not certain he realized it would leave Austin. He sent it from Austin to Austin. Definitely testing things though.

Possibly. I think he's probably enjoying the terror he's causing here though.

Most people weren't worried at first because it was on the east side and left on porches. Then the street and in a different area completely. Now, it could be anyone in town. It's chilling.

I'm curious (and probably watch too much crime tv); are authorities thinking this is a lone wolf because that is how they are referring to 'him' in the media? IOW, not a group, but a solo person?

Hopefully get some paper trail on him or trace back to a drop point with cameras

My, uneducated, guess is that he/she was simply testing to see if the package would be flagged, or caught, at a distribution center. If this person is starting to enjoy seeing their work in the news (which is the norm for these psychopaths) then they probably want to expand things. The idea of being the Unibomber 2.0, would undoubtedly be hard to pass up for them.

Did they say to whom it was addressed or did it just say Austin or what?

I can't imagine they'd release who it was sent to, especially if that person is not a party the investigation is interested in.

Austin PD should find this guy and put him on the case. Doesn't he already live in Austin? Hometown hero in the making.

At 9 a.m., KXAN received information a FedEx Office Print and Ship Center at 5601 Brodie Lane in south Austin was surrounded by authorities. When KXAN called the office, there was an automated message that said the location was closed for the day. Photos show the area is roped off with crime tape.

An officer at the scene told KXAN's Alyssa Goard said the package that exploded at the Schertz facility was shipped from the Brodie location.

Looks like the noose is tightening around the bomber(s).

I don't like the modern surveillance society nor do I want my freedom violated with thought police, but the amount of data that each person leaves behind as they conduct their lives is not only amazing, but in this case, useful.

Bottom right dot is the FedEx store on Brodie. Where is says Gaines creek park is right where the tripwire went off. Two other dogs are outside fedex drop boxes. All very close to each other. I have a hard time thinking this thing is not going to get resolved soon. Over 500 agents who's sole job it is is to find this person.

If this crazy m'fer wants to be Unabomber 2.0, he didn't study 1.0 much. Kaczynski did his bombing over a period of years, not days. That is what is going to undo this guy here.

Agree completely. I just thought it was somewhat similar in nature. Definitely an accelerated timeline with this person, so hopefully that's their undoing.

Somehow I don't think she/he cares. If it is a solo anyway. A group would probably want to go as long as possible, but someone who has been 'triggered' mentally is searching for something IMO. Attention, addressing a perceived wrong, a cry for help, a final statement. Something. Admittedly, I have no background in this.

Makes you think though-how many of those agents are furiously combing through Redditt, message boards etc looking for signs that this person had a web presence?

Probably best that its left to the pros though. Don't want to step on any toes. Thats their rice-bowl anyway.

Someone at Amazon R&D is already trying to make hay out of this by designing a robot that will go out on your porch and jiggle the box a little to see if its safe.
