Was watching the movie Wind River on Netflix. He has a lever action and shows scenes or reloading cartridges. Sweet looking rifle. Is it a .44-40 (cartridges though in the reloading scene look to be a bit long for a .44-40)? And anyone know what is the make/model on the rifle?

Thanks. Anyone on here ever owned or shot one? Am also interested in opinions on it.

That gun looks awesome. Warning - it is bound to kick like a mule in 45-70!!! Looks like it's around a grand retail.

Bought one in August. I only function fired 3 rounds through it. Son fired 2 rounds to see what it was like. Yes it kicks, but when T-Rex shows up, I got him covered ;-)

I've got one...not the stainless one though.

The Hornady leverlution (or whatever) don't kick too bad...but can't shoot more than 15-20 at a time. The heavier stuff...500gr hard casts (Buffalo bore or something)...I've shot a few, I won't shoot them again until I'm shooting at a charging grizzly, which is why I bought the gun. (At least that's how I convinced myself to buy it)

We talked about this at work. Short barrel like that and he's making those long shots with that accuracy? Is that realistic?

I mean, it's a movie but with handloads (as portrayed in the movie) and an experienced shooter, absolutely.

That's what we decided on. I figured that was why they added in that scene of him reloading.

****massive spoiler if you haven't seen the movie*******

Didn't appear too far. Easily within the accurate range of a handload 45/70.

I'm also assuming a USFWS officer would carry a 45-70 is due to the Grizzlies in Wyoming, right?

I know it's a movie but that's the first thing I thought of when I saw his rifle... way over kill for a yote or lion.

I have one as shown in the movie. Mine is a JM stamped Marlin and is very accurate for an iron site rifle. Very handy and yes... it will clear your sinuses. The movie is also worth watching. Pretty good flick.

I have a run of the mill 1895 in .45-70 (the base model they modified for this gun).

There is no doubt at all when you pull the trigger.

Barrel length doesnt have a whole lot to do with accuracy. It affects velocity more than anything. You can make long shots with a short barrel with practice.

I guess the barrel being short wasn't the main reason we questioned it. I personally don't own a lever action with that type of bullet/tip like a 30-30, but I've always heard they aren't very accurate guns. My boss does own a 30-30 and he question it as well.

Most guns are more accurate than the person shooting them. They arent long range guns, lots of drop in a .45-70 trajectory. It is a large and slow moving round, power is in the mass.

But if you know Kentucky windage with your round, you can hit things a good ways off.

If you watched the movie, you would notice he is using a smaller, bolt action, rifle when shooting coyotes.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

I did watch it and thought he was using a bolt action then... after he pulled the other rifle out, I figured it was just me not paying attention. After all, I was mowing down some Cookie two-step ice cream and wasn't fully committed to the movie at that point.

Quick side note:

I found this site a while ago and it only references firearms used in movies.

You can say that again.

My brother had one in the Guide Series. Had a muzzle brake but still kicked like a 300 mag. I really enjoyed shooting it. It did not have a bit of a problem knocking down a large hog.
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

Yeah. It kicks like a mf but is like Zeus' lightning bolt on a hog.

Never seen this movie. But 2:27 looks pretty accurate.
