Mountain Lion Attack

The people of Waller County are working themselves up into a frenzy over a possible Mountain Lion attack on a mini-horse. The older women in the area don't want to listen to reason so I could use a professional opinion on these attack photos. Lots of people are chiming in with their personal experiences of seeing black panthers (I know) and mountain lions in the area recently.

My guess is this was done by scavengers, vultures and coyotes but I'm getting shot down by the masses. The lady claims her mare was bitten on the neck and it's newborn eaten by a "big cat". The mare's neck couldn't have gotten that infected overnight. The puncture mark on the mare's neck was made by the vet to drain it. Wounds on the newborn look like a vulture ate out the eyes and mouth then something like a coyote chewed on the legs.

Warning, graphic photos.

Looks like she got caught in a barbwire fence and had to tear herself loose.

There's now a lady claiming that she saw a black panther that was shot dead with her own two eyes and several others shot dead in the area.

i doubt if a mountain lion bit that mini on the neck it would still be standing

I recently responded to a neighborhood post about a small mountain lion. Trust me, it wont matter how much evidence you provide to prove it wasnt a mountain lion, you are still wrong. Everyone loves to be the one that saw a mountain lion, was there when law enforcement verified a sighting, etc. You will have people link stories about mountain lions being seen in your area with photographic proof. You can show the photo is from a legit verified wildlife site in a completely different area of the country. Trust me...you are still wrong.

No claw marks, and no scratches, but some injuries and punctures around the neck?

They've never seen a critter get tangled up in a fence or gate trying to Reaaach for that big growth of new grass on the other side?

Dammit, it's getting worse. Now people are reporting Jaguar sightings in the area.

At least now there are two other people on my side, arguing against dozens that know for a fact mountain lions are all over the place killing livestock.

Lexofer, I believe you are spot on with your version. That "neck bite" is a couple week old abscess, you can see the necrotic green tissue. Where are the Vet's chiming in on this? I guess there might be a insurance claim going on here.

Oh man, I knew when I saw this on my Waller facebook page it would be splendid fodder for texags, but I forgot to post. I love living here, but gen pop stereotype is spot on.

And...as someone who lives on a very remote dirt road and has seen LITERALLY truck loads of dead whild pigs dumped on the side of the road....that dead horse has every mark of scavenger.

As a matter of fact, I would be hard pressed not to offer a neglect comment for those owners.

Seriously:

RE: Panther - "yes it attacked one of my mares in labor, ripped her open and ate her baby"

I've been here forever....and I see bobcats out the ass on my game cameras. Now, all of a sudden, I got panthers and cougars and **** running around open pastures near Repkas and the citizens are convinced there is some cat population burst because now they all see it.

You know what the problem is...the problem is that the cat population is the same, but the human population from Katy has increased.

Someone posted photo proof of a cougar at their chicken coop...complete with spots.

Thanks to the OB I know how to do an image search. The mountain lion pic on my Nextdoor lives at the San Diego zoo. After I pointed that out I was told it was maybe a 'representative of what they look like'. Except when it was posted the caption was 'this is a picture of the one that lives in Fair Oaks, taken last year'. Uh huh. Thanks ursus!

All the photo hosting websites are blocked at work and it would take too long to do from my phone so I'll just quote some highlights here.

Me and one other guy trying to be rational, responses to that:

- Omg cougars are everywhere stop and talk to your game warden. Just because you don't see them doesn't mean there's not any. I didn't think Hempstead had any we know and have seen ones shot or their loud screams so believe what you want but your county has them.

- Wont be long and everyone will claim they are seeing Black Panthers on here also

- There was a black panther shot over double culvert and Springer bottom to be quite certain. Seen dead with my 2 eyes. MtLion, cougar, panther all the same thing. But there has been several black panthers killed here so please don't be so naive. Or sarcastic ask the game warden I'm sure it was reported js

- Four types of large cats have been found in Texas, the Mountain Lion, Jaguars (which come in spotted and black), Ocelot, and Bobcat. There most certainly have been black Jaguars here since I was a child, and I'm in my 30's. My grandparents, who live in Bellville, showed me a video when I was a child that their neighbor had, she was a sherrif's officer, that she received from someone who had filed a report. They travel up from Mexico, where they are very commonly found.

I provide link showing last jaguar was spotted in Texas in 1948.

- Response to me: look up Black Pathers and Black Jaguars in Texas. You will find otherwise, even from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

I ask for this evidence

- you're talking to a brick wall I know what we were taken to look at and I know what I saw cross me and unless a bobcat has got huge with solid color and long tail hell I'm done

- I shouldn't need to post 50 websites or links when I provided you what to Google. Hell, the first three pages is nothing but links providing you with evidence that you need to see so badly, as if your opinion changes facts or reality.

- There are even videos on the first page of links for you.

- Yes we have the around lake Somerville! Black Panthers and around Jasper!

Other Black Panther sightings:

- My brother lives a mile from Lake Somerville since he was a child he is 58yrs old now and hunts all over that area. He has seen it all! Black panther also. He raises sheep which he has had his share of kills. Wild pack of dogs, lots of coyotes and Big Cats!

- I'm a ways from you but one day over here by repkas I spotted a huge back panther there are many open pastures here like over in your area I'm sorry this happened to your babies

- I've seen a black panther on Macedonia by The Oil Ranch

I love logic like this, "- Omg cougars are everywhere... Just because you don't see them doesn't mean there's not any."

Does that same logic apply to Sasquatch? I haven't seen any, so they must everywhere.

On a more serious note, you're arguing with idiots. You aren't going to win.

One of the first sightings from a guy:

- Whoever the tool is saying there's not any lions in waller county is an idiot. I've seen three but I'll admit two of my sightings could have been the same large one miles apart. The young one was smaller than the other two. And I know the difference in a bobcat and a lion. As for the black cats...... about 15 years ago I was training dogs out back by Bessie's creek when one of my females went on point. As I walked up a solid black cat got up with a full tail (like a lion) but the same size as my dog. I'm not going to attempt to say what exactly it was but it wasn't a house cat and looked to weigh about 40-50 pounds.

One of the ladies that was being rude above responding to him.

- Thank you because us women these men think we are stupid and I know what I saw. Thx for speaking up but be prepared to hear you don't know what you're talking about from these guys. They seem to know it all

- It was a panther. There have been multiple times it or they were seen.

Just pulled this from my game camera today near 529. Damn dog was barking, so had to figure out why. You can see more black panthers behind the albino deer herd.

If someone brings up a big black cat in Texas in conversation, just ignore everything else they say regarding wildlife.

It's kind of like when someone says automatic weapons instead of semi-automatic, without knowing the difference.

I wish I lived around amusing trolls and not rude morons but unfortunately I think it's the latter.

I had a neighbor I've never talked to before commenting on a thread on that group last week accusing me of tax fraud. She didn't even notice I had commented on the same thread like 30 minutes before. I politely explained how my Wildlife Exemption worked and she responded by blocking me.

I try not to post at all for that type of reason. Sometimes the politics suck me in, but unless I just can't help myself....I just read and try to move on. The waller county courthouse/CHL was one...and sometimes I can't help myself when people are just being flat out nosey. I don't want to put it past someone to get real dicky do whatever they do. Plus I have some lodge members on my facebook and....I dunno....I just don't want the attention.

You have your work cut out....they are pretty convinced. LOL.

And y'all used to think I made this crap up. Now picture having to physically take the time out of your day to drive 200 miles round trip to deal with said crazy. That is one thing I don't miss.

As stated, that is mostly scavenging. I don't see anything particularly consistent with a large cat.

They has never been a verified melanistic jaguar recorded within 200 miles of Texas. All known Texas jaguars were of the spotted variety (they only make up about ~6% of the population where they are common.....the far south end of South America). Uh Uhhh, no melanistic mountain lions are verifiable anywhere (you can find the one sorta from 1954ish in Costa Rica.........so, ask for a photo.

Thanks for the reply. I asked for evidence since apparently I'm the only one in Waller County that hasn't seen a black panther and just got a lot of sass and name calling back.

Any confirmed sightings of regular mountain lions in Waller County in recent times?

Not that I am aware. But I am about 2.5 years removed from TPWD, but I doubt it has changed.

How common are mountain lions out near Del Rio? A buddy of mine shot one this winter out there while hunting.
