So the wife convinced me to book a trip to Napa Valley. She has a few wine tasting ideas lined up. I'm looking for suggestions about other, more outdoor ish ideas. Any fishing or hiking or anything else up that alley to do?

TIA

To piggyback, how did that area come out on the fires? Thinking about taking the mrs. out that way in a few months for her birthday. Never been

We were there at the end of October into November for 2 weeks. The fires affected few of the larger wineries. There are a lot of outdoor activities in the area. The Napa river runs through the valley. Fishing and kayaking are popular. Hiking, biking, and golf are other activities. Not too far a drive to Muir Woods or Mt. Tamalpais. French Laundry is a bucket list item for food lovers.

Not to make light of a terrible situation but that smoke will make for some pretty good vintages in a few years.

Go to frogs leap winery. It's wine tasting but they also have an cool outdoor patio with cornhole games to play and a nice area to walk around and explore. Cool place.

We had kids along on our Napa trip, and they wanted to see Jack London's 'Wolf House' ruins, which turned out to be a pleasant walk/hike for all, around the state historical park that also houses a small museum and the graves of London and his wife. It is in Glen Ellen, near the Benzinger winery.

It's a cool place to see. I work in agriculture and seeing their vineyards and asking tons of questions about the Ag side was definitely interesting.

I recommend lining up a private tour guide. We used this guy. He lined up 4-5 stops for us to tour with our group of 4. If it's just 2 of you, see if he can match you up with another group they might already have. Not uncommon.

You can go on your own and tour different vineyards for a $20-30 tour fee and then you buy wine if you want. With a private tour, these tour guides take you to smaller vineyards and you visit with either the owner or someone in the family that owns it. The tours are free,, but the expectation is that you buy a few bottles. So you still spend $25-50 each stop on 2-5+ bottles if you find something you really like.

You'll probably get roped into "hiking" which Can be a lot like hunting, but instead of wandering around in the woods and killing stuff, you just wander around.

For "outdoorsy" add a visit to the Muir Woods.
The last thing I want to do is hurt you. But, it's still on the list.

We spend a day fishing Fall River one year, nothing remarkable but a day fly fishing. The Sacramento River delta isn't too far away! Check out Fosters bar in Rio Vista for an incredible display of taxidermy work. The only place that I have been to with more or better taxidermy is Tommy Bollacks.

Not an outdoors tip, but the Russian River Valley (not far away) has better wine.

Edit: if you're stuck in Napa Valley, Lagier Meredith, Blankiet Estate, and Pahlmeyer are all excellent wineries.

How much time do you have? If you have a couple of days to fill, drive up 101 and see the redwoods. Camped up there several years back and it was awesome. Fern Canyon was a really nice hike. Great food in those little towns up there.
