I am going to build a table for my BGE and need to find some lumber for the build. The table will be under a porch but will stay outside. From my understanding Cedar or Cypress are good for this application. Any input or suggestions are appreciated.

No clue on places to buy wood, but white oak is also a good option for a harder wood vs cedars/cypress. It's closed cell structure makes it a good alternative. (But not red oak)

Thanks agrams, this is some information I am looking for.

For some reason I always forget about Eberhard Lumber. I will check them out this weekend.

it depends on what you want. I've seen some at McCoy's in San Marcos and you could try http://cedarsupply.net/ in Kyle

A good lumber yard will be better, but you can get Cedar at a lot of Lowes. It's not true rough cut material, but is planed down less than most dimensional lumber. 2x4s are like 1.75"x 3.75" vs standard dimensional being at 1.5"x3.5" and they have a rougher texture. They have the same in 1" materials too.

There's a place called Jimmy's cypress in Austin (I haven't dealt with them - yet), and a cedar co. just north of the Blanco river/ San Marcos on I-35 (can't remember their name). ETA: looks like hot rod did

A couple mills with red cedar in the Bastrop/elgin area. Hell, I have literally a dozen or more tons of it but none of it is milled.

Cypress is more rot resistant but also stays wet longer than cedar.

Southwest Trading Post off of Hamilton Pool Road in Austin/Bee Cave is pretty good. Turn around for orders, for me, has been about a week. I've only bought East Texas Red Cedar from there and have been very happy with it. Prices seemed slightly cheaper than a McCoys, Lowes, Home Depot..

Also, I learned this after my first trip there.. When you order wood from a mill a 6"x6" is not 5.5"x5.5" it is 6"x6". Same for any other dimension you order, a 2"x4" is a 2"x4". Typically the length of the wood is more than you order as well. I ordered 8- 6"x6"X10' and the length of the posts ranged from 10.25' to almost 11'.

Correct on the dimensions. Mills speaks in terms of quarters. With 4/4 being 1" thick and 6/4 being 1.5" thick.

Many years ago I bought cedar at the lampasas yard that was mentioned, but that's not near San Marcos. There was a place in Johnson city, I think it was called Deleon's, where I bought rough cut cedar. That was all ten or more years ago.
Edit: found it

There was a guy named Lewis Jasik out by Marion/seguin area who used to cut mesquite logs for me. He would have a blown down cypress from time to time. If you find him take along some Busch light.

One last note, the stuff at Lowe's or HD is a completely different species than the "cedar" that is cut in Tx.
