Is this possible?

Within 1-2 hrs from Houston. Don't own a boat. Just looking for a location I could park and walk to, then throw out a dozen or so decoys.

Not looking for limits or anything but just the chance for a few shots.

Any advice?

Thank you

Think these are lyrics to a popular Lyle Lovett song.

Anahuac Wildlife Refuge. Walk in where the Middleton tract is.

We hunted these places ALL the time in Highschool and College. We bought the $40.00 APH permit when we bought our liscense . Back then you got there the night before and parked in line and wait for the biologist to show up at 4:00 am +/- 30 minutes to let you in and assign a site number.

I haven't done it in years so I'm unsure if the protocol is the same now or not but damn we killed a bunch of birds down there. Some spots were more productive than others and some of them were shorter walks and we got to the point where we knew which ones to get and which ones to pass up. Not every hunt was limits but I assure you we limited plenty of times.

I'm too old and fat to try it anymore 3-400 yard walks through the marsh mud would surely do me in in my present state. But we did hammer birds down there back then.

Good luck!

There's a lottery system that gets pre-drawn for drive and walk hunts down by Sargent. More info on the fws page.

I used to walk in at the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge quite a bit and hunt a few of the back lakes. It's a heck of a hump through the swamp but we had decent success. I live in Missouri City and it was about 30-40 min drive

Y'all are becoming soft, not even a single post telling him to go figure it out for himself...

A couple years ago I saw a guy hunkered down in about 2' of water, about 75' from the bank and hwy 181, during morning rush hour, in nueces bay between portland and the hotel. Had about 50 decoys around him, no ducks.

So yeah, it's certainly possible.

Texas Point probably over 2 hours depending on what part of Houston, but walkable (not easy) and probably get a few shots. Heard the area is holding quite a few ducks.

Several places you can walk in on the south shoreline of Swan Lake or Christmas, you are just going to have to do some scouting to see where exactly you can access and get to. There used to be several duck blinds in the various coves and points, not sure if they are still there or not anymore since it's been a long time last I was on the water.

Won't be world class hunting, but you'll be out there and there should be some shooting opportunities depending on weather.

Brazoria NWR, Big Boggy, Peach Point, San Bernard, Anahuac and McFaddin are all in the general area of Houston and have public hunting opportunities. As stated above, at least on Peach Point you would basically have to spend the night in your truck to get in line and get a slot draw, so it's not exactly convenient, but very doable.

I've shot a lot of birds out of Justin Hurst. It's a good place to hunt if you don't have a boat. I'd recommend you get a little hand-held GPS to help you get to some of the hunting spots. They have the coordinates for all of the areas posted. It is really easy to get turned around at 4:30am when it's foggy and dark. There isn't necessarily one area that everyone goes for. The refuge has good habitat all over that can hold ducks. Some spots will get hotter during certain points during the season and the guys who camp out will usually grab them.

Wherever you go be sure to hang around for a while after your hunt and talk to the biologist and glean some knowledge from them. The Justin Hurst biologist used to be an Aggie and was a really good guy to talk to. I'm not sure if he is still there or not but we always shot the bull with him for a while after our hunts and got to know him pretty well. The duck hunting community has a reputation for being tight lipped but if you get in and work over certain areas and get to know the regulars and the biologist then they'll start opening up to you.

We used to have some damn good hunts at San Bernard NWR. Not sure what it's like these days.

I used to park and walk in at spots between Rockport and the ferry landing.

Like Paloma said, it was a matter of driving around and figuring it out on my own.

40 HP evinrude. There's not an active listing anywhere because I'm not supper motivated to get rid of it but would sell it if someone will pay what I'm willing to let it go for.

You can email me at bobkittenboating@yahoo.com if you're really interested.
