Was cleaning some of my mom's old guns and had several older wood stock rifles that need some help. I was able to get the barrel clean and action cleaned/lubed, but didn't have the right things for some rust on the outside of a barrel and scratches to the stock.

Anyone have a good rust remover or wood cleaner/polish that they use?

For rust soak 0000 steel wool in oil and rub lightly. It takes a lot of time but it will remove all rust without damaging the bluing. If you can soak the rust spots over night it will be easier to remove.

For wood I am not sure other than sanding and refinishing.

I typically use brass wool to remove surface rust from barrels, scopes, etc. You can also use copper wool, but it must to be 100% copper or it will damage the bluing.

Brass and copper wool are soft and will not leave surface scratches. I have been told that a light brush with some fine steel wool will also do the trick, but I have always been a little afraid to go that route.

My wife's dad was the weapons curator at the Witte Museum and an armorer for the Army. I watched him for many years restore old firearms. His method of choice was extremely fine brass wool used with NO OIL and rubbing very gently....cleaning the wool very often. He would apply Hopp's rust preventive and cleaner on the bluing/finish and let it sit on the rust for a day or so before rubbing with the brass wool. He would also use Norton Ultra Fine Crocus Cloth with honing oil on heavier rust.
I have used his methods and also like a product called "Big 45 Frontier Metal Cleaner" from Brownells.
