I was working on my father's Remington Fieldmaster 572 this weekend and it got me thinking I have never seen a pump 22 for sale online or in store. I did a search and Remington does still sell them and Henry is the only other pump I can find.

It was always around when I was a kid and it was what I first learned to shoot. It is pretty handy able to shoot LR, Long and Short. He would also use it to shoot CBs when needing to dispose of a varmint on the yard.

Where they ever more common? If so what happen? I am assuming cheaper more reliable auto loaders. Anyone else have experience with pump 22s?

I haven't shot one. They seem neat. I've got a lever action 22 that'll do shorts too long rifle though.

I have a Taurus M72 that I bought brand new in 2001ish. Don't think I've seen another one in store since. It's a fun gun, but I rarely shoot it anymore because my semi auto options are even more fun.

We inherited a Remington 121 Fieldmaster. Pure pleasure to shoot. If I ever see one on a used rack, I'll likeky pick It up.

The Fieldmaster is one of the best guns ever. Period.

And one reason they are not often sold is they are used. Resale guns are not often used. That's why they are expendable. we have a 572, actually a 121, from the mid fifties that has been in constant use since it was bought. It has probably spent a total of ten nights in a controlled environment in the last 30 years, I would bet your whatever rifle you want to bring that is not a dedicated target rifle that the 572 can outshoot it. I couldn't begin to count how many living things, from rats to deer, that gun has killed. And it kills every time.

If the gods told me I could only have one gun and gave me that one as an option, it would be a no brainer.

I own another one that is in pretty good shape that is kind of a safe queen.

I've never seen one on a shelf either. Definitely a neat rifle to hand down to kids and grandkids.

Never owned one, always wanted a galley gun just because. My grandfather was a lever guy over a pump guy, so we had a couple of Marlin 39A's that could shoot any type of .22 round.

I've got a Winchester Model 62 (circa 1950) that my father gifted me for my 17th birthday. It is pretty fun to plink with and is fairly accurate. Cool looking gun.

I bought a 572 in about 1976. One of the best rifles I ever owned and it will be passed down in the family. Remington made a premium model during that time period, included a highly polished blued finish and a beautiful glossy walnut stock. I really liked this model, but it had a wider blade front sight and I preferred the small bead sight on the plainer 572 field master. I think I paid about $115 new. I thought that was an outrageous price at the time, but still glad I bought it. I wouldn't trade it for two of any other 22 that I have ever seen.

My cousin passed down his Rossi pump .22 to his boy recently. That was my favorite gun to shoot growing up, and we had a lot of fun shooting plenty of other rifles, shotguns and pistols. I too would love to have a pump .22. Perhaps Eyeguy could come up with a group buy.

My dad has a 572 that is the gun I learned to shoot with as a kid. Such a great gun, so much fun to shoot. Absolutely love that gun.

They were more common back in the day.

I don't know for sure, but I wonder if they were expensive/time consuming to produce and that's why they went away.

Another thing to consider is to look at the companies who made them: Remington, Marlin, Savage, Winchester....they've either died out, crapped out (in the case of Big Green), been bought out or moved on to other markets.

Yea I absolutely think manufacturing costs and industry consolidation got them. They were not cheap to make. So did changing tastes and a giant leap forward in seminautos. They just couldn't compete, specifically with the 10/22s.

But they are scarce and valued. I just checked gunbroker and good condition is over $500 for the 121s.

I've said it before, the AWB of '94 caused a tectonic shift in gun ownership and interest.

The dems tried to get rid of scary black guns, instead they guaranteed their popularity and huge market share for a generation to come when they were a minority of ownership or interest beforehand.

I've got a Winchester model 62 that is a pump or slide action. The barrel is cut down and the stock it cut shorter for a youth to learn on. It's awesome and accurate.

My first gun. Still have it. Taught all of my kids and my friends' kids to shoot with this gun. So awesome.

My dad had a Browning pump in .22 Mag, tube-fed, held about 14 rounds, I think. Nice rifle, as I recall.

Mine is a remington model 12, shoots up to lr shells. Manufactured in the 1920s. It is one of my main hunting and plinking rifles - I use it all the time.

The remingtons and the Winchesters (which started with the 1890) are both excellent. They handle so well and point quickly when shouldered. The Winchesters have much more collector value, which is why I own the remington.

My uncle had one at my grandparents house, not sure which one. I believe it was a remington. I wasn't allowed to shoot it unless my uncle was around which happened probably once a year. Any other time I was there I would just stare at it on the wall and wish. I had a single shot .22 that was my dad's that means more to me, but I always envied that .22 pump. I think it's more of a nostalgia thing for me or maybe always wanting something I couldn't have.

I am holding a Winchester 90 22short pump until a nephew matures enough to be worthy of my father-in-law's family heirloom. A depression/dust bowl era food gathering implement.

There's been a Rem model 14 .22 in our family since the Depression. Family lore has it that Grandpa (farmer, not hunter) saw the lean times coming and acquired 2 model 14's from the hardware store, the .22 and a .35 Rem for deer shooting on the farmstead. His son (my uncle) grew up shooting both those guns and continued the pump tradition in the 50's when he bought a Rem model 760 with his first paycheck out of high school. At the time the 760 was a big upgrade because it went from the tube magazine to the stacked box and was chambered in Spitzer rounds, so he got a .30-06. I still shoot all three, and they're still nuts-on. The 760 is extremely accurate at 100 yards with it's hilarious 2 3/4 power Korean War era fixed scope. I'd never change it.

I wonder if pump rifles fell out of favor in part just out of the physical logistics of firing follow-up rounds? The fore-end, while resting on bench or branch, has to be picked up to cycle the next round. Now we're spoiled and able to maintain the shouldering between rounds with the bolt-action or the semi.

Rossi .22 pump owner. Got it for Christmas back in the mid to late 80's. Still love to shoot it. Fun gun for a kid - especially when you figure out if you keep the trigger pulled and pump it continuously real fast it turns it into a "semi-automatic".

Grew up shotting one. Still one of those most fun guns to shot. Action is so short and easy making it perfect for a youngster.

I like to buy and collect nice bolt action rifles but I do almost all of my deer and hog hunting with one of two 760s. One is a 30-06 from the late sixties. The other is a .270 from the early seventies.

I bought the 06 many years ago in a pawn shop for $230. I wouldn't confuse it for a tack driver but it is plenty accurate. It also shoots 150 grain core loks and sierra game kings thru the same hole.

The .270 is passed down in my wife's family. She uses it every year.

Both are fun guns. I'm a lefty so they fit well for me.

I also have one in .257 Roberts in 98% condition. It has never left the safe but it may one day.

Ditto this. Still have my Rossi. Walked miles as a kid hunting coons (can I type that--it's what my Pa called them?) and squirrels with that gun.

I have my great grandpa's model 1890 pump 22. Only shoots 22longs though. Based on serial number that rifle turned 115 this year if my memory serves me right. Still accurate as heck and runs fine.

Since I actually saw some 22Shorts at Academy the other day.
