Need the OB's thoughts. Bought a new place about a year ago and there are tons of hogs. Not living out there yet, but will move out there in a year or so. Having dinner with the new/future neighbors across the creek last weekend and we start talking hogs. They say that older lady was attacked last year about a mile away and almost bled out. She was supposedly only walking across a pasture and not hunting and no indication she came between sow and piglets. Neighbor claims they saw a 300 pounder on our place just last week.....possible given what is being seen every night on the game camera. They say (and other neighbor verifies who doesn't hunt but his wife always carries when walking on pastures/woods) that almost all neighbors carry hog pistols when they are not in vehicles and just out on the land.

So...wife is now insisting I buy her a pistol capable of taking down a charging hog. She is tall but only weighs about 135 and not "big boned." I think I understand the physics of punch vs. kickback I understand a .22 will most often kill a hog if you shoot him behind the ear....but charging hog is mostly going to present a head and some chest....he won't be posing for the shot or in a trap. Also appreciate that odds are very slight she will ever be attacked and that it's more likely to be 50 pound to 100 pound vs. 300 pounder. Most likely benefit is really to give her confidence that she is protected if she needs it. Neighbors have convinced her already that her 9MM won't cut it.

I don't think she could comfortably shoot a .460 or 44 magnum....my two favorites for the job. Hoping for something she can wear in a holster....she's not going to lug a 12 gauge around. Any suggestions from the OB what might work best for her? .38 special? .357 magnum? 10MM? auto or revolver? brand/model?

I follow the rules (and don't call me a liar

Thanks.

9MM with hollowpoints will do the job. It's what I carry out at our lease.

She ever shot a .45? My 1911 doesn't kick that bad due to the weight, I've shot 9mm's that are less pleasant.

I carry a .357 SIG with Hornady Critical Duty ammo. It has dispatched a 300 pound hog.

You'll get all kinds of advice on what's the best cartridge to take down a hog, but none of that matters if she doesn't feel comfortable shooting it and/or carrying it.

Take your wife to a range that offers different pistols to rent, or arrange for some friend with a decent arsenal to let you borrow some pistols so she can see what 9mm vs. 45 ACP vs. 10mm feels like, then make a decision on what to buy. The 357 Sig mentioned above is a great option too.

If you go down the 10mm path be aware that some commercial 10mm loads are basically the same as 40 S&W, which can be nice to practice with before working up to the real stuff.

Depends on what kind of mood I am in...
Something Comfortable: Glock 17 9mm
Something Fancy: 1911 45 with the custom aggie grips
Or feeling like a cowboy: 357 Rossi with 6' barrel (however most the time shoot 38 specials out of it)

Killed hogs with all 3

I have killed many hogs with handguns and have used from a 38sp to a 44magnum. I personally like my 41mag but my 9mm with 124 JHP worked excellent. The 9mm is sufficient to take one down and allows many quick follow up rounds if necessary.

This will be interesting....

Very few hogs reach 300lbs
Very few hogs ever charge people
Very few people are accurate with a handgun and a charging animal

Show them no mercy with a rifle and they won't get close enough to your wife to worry about the pistol shot.

Which is why a desert eagle is the obvious choice here.

Glock 20 or 40 in 10mm Auto. It's what I carry, and it's worked well on big hogs. Stopped one charging once.

I recently shot a ~100lb pig to smoke for Thanksgiving and I was surprised what it took to actually kill the pig. I was using .45 hollow points and it took 4 head shots before the pig actually fell to the ground. The first shot was probably 10ft away, and then each one was progressively closer. Even after those 4 it was still on the ground kicking and screaming so I had to put a 5th shot into the head at point blank before it was completely lights out.

That being said, it hauled ass away from me after the first shot and I had to chase it around the pig pen to deliver the others. It would probably take multiple well placed rounds from a 9mm to actually drop/kill a pig, but I bet it would only take 1 or 2 rounds connecting with a charging pigs head for it to change its mind and stop charging.

To DRT a good size hog would take a rifle round or a pistol so large it would be super uncomfortable for your wife to carry and shoot.

My wife shoots my 10mm pistols with ease. It's not as bad a people portray from behind their keyboards. And they are one shot DRT. Done it a handful of times. Never had one run.

Sounds like this is the best suggestion for OP then.

Sounds like a good reason to buy one of these just for the cool factor of seeing your wife walking around with it in a holster like this.

For a more practical answer see if anyone has a Judge she can try. I've never seen a charging hog and may be way off but I figure if she hits it with some 00 buckshot out of a .410 they probably won't stick around and you can alternate between that and the 45LC.

You would be surprised as to how well 9mm Gold dot's or hydra shock's do on hogs. I have dispatched several with single shots from a Beretta PX4, most of the time it was while chasing them through a field in a ranger. Having multiple high capacity magazines really makes chasing hogs in a ranger a lot of fun and surprisingly sporting for once I actually wore my seat belt while riding in it.

Been charged a few times by hogs when hunting over dogs. This is serious, serious business. I have a wife & have gone through this with her. Feel free to print out, I hold no copyrights and want this freely distributed for public safety.

I'd recommend a sawed off 12 gauge shotgun in semi-auto & load it up with buckshot.

To prepare her for the inevitable charge, set up a skeet thrower to hurl a clay pigeon directly and zero that sucker in at about knee high. (This will simulate the speed and suddenness of a raging wild boar)

Be sure to outfit your bride in full armor as she trains for hog combat. (I suggest watching something like "The Road Warrior" to get an idea) Face coverage is important, maybe one of those clear plexiglass things like the football players wear.

The key here is to have her walk slowly forward towards the thrower from about 40 yards out while you lay safely behind a shed or small shield (perhaps made of old corrugated roof panels or plywood) Your wife will not have the luxury of knowing when you will shoot the pigeon at her. This will get her accustomed to the quick draw.

A few beers in your system would make you more unpredictable, just like a wild animal.

I also suggest perusing YouTube and looking up some videos of hogs being slaughtered. You want that audio content blaring as your wife marches towards her adversary. You want to as closely simulate the charge as possible. Also nestle the thrower in tall grass so it is a bit obscured.

Once the gets past stage one (Hitting the target 8 out of 10 times) then add 1-2 more skeet throwers so she can't focus on just the one. You may enlist a few of your friends (with beer) to run the other throwers.

If you do all this... maybe... just maybe... she'll survive.

Basically all this. What neighborhood do you live in that the neighbor's fear for their life from hogs? I've never met any person that is so scared of hogs that they need to pack heat to defend themselves at their house?

Hell, give her a .22 pistol and if she sees one tell her to shoot it into the ground. The sound of it going off would be just as effective as anything else she could do. I've shot boars with a 270wsm multiple times and still had them kicking and trying to get up. The odds of her doing much good at all with a high caliber pistol are 50/50 and that's even if she hit it perfect in the heat of the moment.

I have overseen trapping 400+ pigs since April, scout for hogs 2 days a week, and haven't felt a need for protection from the pigs......now the neighborhoods is a different matter
