If you've never shot one I'd recommend getting a .22 to learn proper mechanics and all. If you're wanting something that has more power then go to a range and rent several models and several calibers, one will feel better than the others. Get that one

What's the intended use? Price point?

If it's home defense/range use, then I would recommend something full size like the Glock 17, M&P, XDM, CZ75, Tangfolio Witness... there's also the Browing Buckmark, S&W Victory, or Ruger Mk IV for a .22 LR pistol. The list goes on.

First off, I'm a dealer so keep that in mind. I do a pretty damned good job of not letting profit margins affect how I recommend things but I also don't want to have someone take my advice for something without knowing that.

Secondly, this is kind of like... what's the best 1st car? A little extra background would help a lot.

Important things:

Use - are you wanting a range gun, home defense gun, carry gun, etc or some hybrid use. Range/home overlaps very well while range/carry doesn't as well.

Budget - I hate bringing money into this but it matters, a lot. If you want to keep things under $300, there will generally be a completely different gun that will make sense than if you're willing to drop a grand.

Comfort - this is something that won't be easy to address online, but we can point you in the right direction.

Also, do you live in Texas? If not, some other states have restrictions on what kind of gun you can own.

I will tell you flat out, the G19 is typically the first gun we talk about with a new shooter. Think of it as the Camry of the gun world... reliable, not cheap but not expensive, lots of aftermarket parts.

Pros - absolutely reliable, decent accuracy, modifications out the yin yang for it

Cons - Glocks bore me to tears. They all look the same. It will never be an elite gun for anything specific outside of defense. I can nearly always find a range gun that will have a better trigger, be more accurate, etc. It's also bigger than I'd want to carry.

Seeing the edit... EDC and home defense... I'd personally look at a Glock 26, Glock 43, Springfield XD Mod 2, S&W Shield and S&W M&P9C and expand the search from there. 19s can be carried but they are big. You'll be happier in a carry sense with a 26 or a 43. That's why I like the Mod 2, even though I pretty much loathe Springfield... Very comfortable gun that is about the same size as a Glock 26 but it comes standard with an extended capacity magazine that has a sleeve on it essentially giving you a longer grip and more capacity.

Oh, Sig P320s are trickling back to market now. We just got 5 in so that's something else to look at.

If your looking for pure opinions without taking into account any qualifiers you may have:

CZ P01

You can carry it, put it in a drawer for home defense or take it to the range and shoot it every week.

Would it be best to get a gun for every day carry and one for home ?

I carry my Glock 19 almost every day. I have a couple of smaller pistols, and a couple of much nicer pistols, but the G19 is still the one I carry most. If I only owned one pistol, it would be my G19.

I'm a Springfield guy so I have to recommend an XD mod2 9mm for a start. It's a great gun, and the extended magazines give my hand a full grip. Also have an XDM 9mm with an optic and I wouldn't ever shoot another brand after the excellent range days with it.

Most prefer that, but there are definitely people that carry fullsize guns all the time. Depends on personal preference. I know people that rock a 1911 all day long. Would drive me nuts but if they'r eok with it, cool.

Yes and no. It's not necessary, but might make sense depending on how you dress, how you carry, etc.

Firearms are tools. There is something to be said for having the right tool for the right job. However, if you start off with a mid sized pistol like the G19, CZ P01, etc., you will have a pistol that is easy to learn on and handle, with a good ammo capacity and the ability to mount a light for home defense, but is still a decent size to carry with a minimal level of difficulty.

Start off with one pistol. Spend the rest of your initial budget on an intro training class and ammo. Once you have basic proficiency with your first pistol, your license to carry, and some experience carrying, then you can best decide for yourself, based on your own experience, if you need a different pistol.

Where are you located?

I'd shoot several before buying. The OB folks are pretty generous in this regard.

Take your budget of $700, spend $500 on something like a Glock 19, VP9, M&P, whatever.

Take the other $200 and invest in a training class.

That is my wife's first pistol. She got her chl with it and carried it intil she discovered pink guns.

Its a good gun but will stovepipe if you limp wrist it, so practice practice practice (you should do no matter what you get)

Not all the time, but I do carry my USPSA open glock at times. Red dot, magwell and all.

My current LTC instructor (until I can get Tim certified as an instructor and then keep everything in house) carries a 1911 everywhere, though it is usually open carried.

I don't do open carry, but looking back on it unless clothes absolutely demand I can't wear a gun on my hip and I have to go with the LCP, the smallest gun I've carried in the last two years in G19/P-01 sized. Everything else is full sized, basically.

Carried everything in this picture at some point or another over the last couple of years. A good belt, a good holster and an untucked shirt can do wonders for what you can carry.

Go to a gun store as quickly as you can. Buy whatever is left. Try to buy some ammo for it.

Any thoughts on a glock 20/29? ....or stick to the 9mm?
BlueSmoke

Whatever you do, find a pistol you are 100% comfortable carrying with a round in the chamber. If not, what's the point.

Punching holes in paper targets with a resting heart rate is not "training". Not really. It's familiarity. Take classes. Lots of them. There is more to carrying than pulling the trigger. Learn the laws. Situational awareness. You are a steward now. Take this responsibility seriously.

I'd argue nothing in your life you ever did worth doing wasn't done with a resting heart rate. When you get an adrenalin dump, your fine motor skills go to sh*t. And more than likely you will be moving. Train to this.

*And listen to EyeGuy when you buy from him....

The 20, 21, 29, and the other 45 acp and 10mm Glocks (except for the slim line models) are the large frame Glocks. They're slightly thicker basically, including the grip. That's why they came out with the SF or slim frame models (21SF).

Early model 20's had some frame issues, but haven't heard anything lately.

Great guns.

If someone is looking at buying their first pistol, it should not be a 10mm.

I bought a Springfield XD Mod 2 (4" service model not the 3" subcompact) a year ago and really like it. Picked it up for around $450 if I recall. I liked the 16+1 capacity and the gun was by far the most comfortable that I held. There were a few other guns I was interested in, but they weren't nearly as comfortable when I held them. As a relative amateur myself, my advice is to go to a gun store and hold the guns in person, then shoot a few to compare. Everyone is different so what feels and shoots comfortable to someone else might feel awkward to you. Good luck.

I have owned a lot of pistols both semi's and revolvers. I unfortunately lost all of them in a tragic boat accident last summer along with all of my other guns. Moving on.

My favorite pistol to shoot was/is my Berreta 92 A1. Very accurate and never a misfire or stove pipe. But you don't see a lot of love for Berretas on the OB.
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.
