When the acorns are gone.

Or when you get enough rain to make the acorns sour.

Typically a big front or a storm, not just little a shower here or there.

on public land. worked really hard and scouted to find the right spot and had great traffic but traffic has died down (best guess is acorns) and do not want to try to move my set up.

A lot!!! Or you need a freeze. A good acorn crop will ruin a deer season if you only hunt feeders. As mentioned above, you're better off hunting the acorns or waiting until they're gone. Unless you like watching squirrels...

Like tlh said, a big rain. Enough for the acorns to be soaked/wet for a few days.

Want to kill deer? Move your setup.

Want to be stubborn? Keep hunting your feeder. They will come back eventually, maybe.

Go spend a few hours gathering a bunch of acorns and put them in your feeder. Then you wont have to go through the terrible trouble of moving your stand

Biologically, you want them on the acorns.

It also depends on what type of oak you are dealing with. Do you know what species you are dealing with? The assorted white oaks they will knock out pretty fast. The red oaks are not as preferred, but the tannins allow them to stick around longer, and eventually they will feed on them.

They will go to the highest concentrations. I know a biologist/guide that goes by the 10 acorn rule. If you are stepping on 10 or more acorns, that is where you want to be.....assuming 11ish size foot. Adjust accordingly if you are a midget or Bigfoot.

Same thing happens every year at the feeders:

1.) Feed deer in off-season
2.) Hope for rain
3.) watch deer grow
4.) wish for rain (or for it to stop)
5.) watch your deer eat acorns
6.) wait for a freeze or hard rain
7.) hope deer return
8.) repeat

I've been collecting Southern Red Oak, Willow Oak and Lacey Oak acorns the past 2 weeks. Over half of each species are already infested with medium to large weevil grubs. The rest are either sound or have minimal damage. Personally, I don't think rain makes a sound acorn go sour. It helps it germinate later if not eaten or washes it down the creek.

Isn't there an oak in TX that produces extremely large acorn crops, regardless of weather conditions, on a wierd 2-3 year interval?

Seem to remember reading that here.

Red oaks in general are every 2 years. The white oak (Q. alba) does a massive bumper crop every three years. Find that in east Texas and there's your deer.
