I am new to fishing there. It seems like too often we get a bite then almost immediately seems like we get hung up in the rocks and end up snapping the line.

What's up? Do fish swim into the rocks below after getting hooked? If so is there anyway to counter it?

Tired of replacing hooks instead of fishing.

Probably they are running into the rocks. Are you bottom fishing or fishing under a float?

Bottom fishing. Seems like it mostly happens in the channel. The gulf side very rarely has the snagging occur.

The channel has a drop off in there where the tides and dredging and rock keeps the channel defined and deep, and I snagged it quite a bit fishing out there.

The gulf side is basically a jetty and sand.

30# braid main line with a lemon rig - 20# leaders.

go straight back along the waterway and fish right across from the coast guard station

When in doubt, do what the Asians do. I fish surfside a couple times a month. Stick with the lemon rig. If you're feeling super Asian, put some duct tape on your cork.

What does the duct tape do?

Adds weight and buoyancy. Or something else magical that makes them catch all the fish. They do it so I do it. Gives you better distance. Just watch them and do what they do, just ...... I mean I wouldn't keep the trash they also keep.

Like was said above though, 30# braid on your line with 20# mono leaders. Braid on the leaders just causes a huge knot. Lighter leaders is so your hook side leader breaks and you only lose half the rig if you do get hung. I usually do about 2 foot on the cork side and 6 or 7 foot on the hook side. Added benefit to the rig is you can feel em take it.
