Flour bluff & south: any tips on fishing the ULM in this area?

I've primarily been a POC guy for most of my fishing life; but the Corporate office & I have recently decided t give this area a try. It's close enough to the beach for her and it seems to be close to some really great fishabe water (albeit water I am not the least bit familiar with). It seems to me that it is a different type of fishing than POC area, and that is a task that will be fun for sure, but I was hoping to gain any tips from y'all to maybe speed up my learning process.

The place we are staying is on a Canal in Flour bluff, so we basically enter the ULM at Bluffs landing marina. So far I have primarily fished the king ranch shoreline area and had mixed results. I have been primarily drifting; partially fishing and partially scouting the depth/bottom contour to get a better idea where to fish in the future (I also primarily fish alone; another reason I prefer drifting). I'm assuming this area I'm primarily poking for depth changes & potholes whereas in POC I personally liked to target drains on heavy tidal movement.

Regarding navigation: it seem shallow but it doesn't seem shallow enough to really be a concern until you get to the land cut, am I off base on this?

How's my plan so far? Any suggested tweaks from those familiar with the area? TIA

Depending on how far south you go I believe there can be some fairly large submerged rocks from stories I've heard, not sure if they would be an issue for running around or not, hopefully someone more familiar can chime in..

We've had a weekend place in the Bluff for about 8 years. We're on a canal as well but in the neighborhood (Tropic Isles) about a half mile north of you. A lot of your neighbors fish and most don't travel too far to find them.

Yes, the waters from JFK south to Baffin are easily navigable. You've got the right idea: drift and fish potholes, grass lines and depth changes. The area doesn't have the diverse features that POC does (back lakes, bayous, etc.).

Duck hunting can be pretty good, too.

A couple of HS buds and I have been with one of the local guides three times in the past 10 months. The first time we went down to Baffin (yes, watch out for the rocks). The second and third times we worked the LM about halfway to Baffin, sometimes hitting holes he had marked on GPS and sometimes cruising and watching for bait activity (the latter hitting the jackpot but we were lucky because the wind was down and it was easy to spot the movement). Finally, we worked the west shoreline between the marina and JFK causeway (basically in some folks' back yards) and picked up some nice specs. Preferred bait was croaker but I did pretty well just chunking plastics (H&H Cocahoe, avocado firecracker) too.

Sweet, thanks! That's actually what Corporate and I are thinking about doing so we rented a condo for July to see how we like it. I dig it. I really like that canal community you are in. It's nice!

I'm actually heading down tonight to fish tomorrow. I'll report in if I find anything; I'm just going to start at Bluff's Landig and fish my way south.

Thanks Mowdy! I've had decent luck lately with the gulp plastics, I'll see if I can find a matching color.

Amen to that, I don't plan on trying Baffin in my boat until I have a good handle on the shoreline north of there. I like my lower unit too much.

For better or worse, the potholes in the area, from my experience, have become fewer and far between, getting grown up by grass. But this spring and summer the trout have been in the grass anyway. This has been a great spring/early summer for trout on lures in the ULM.

Fished three mornings July 4 weekend and the only red I saw was swimming right next to a 20" trout I had at the boat when I was readying the net. Make no mistake, the reds are there. I've caught most of my reds in April/May and the again in October. I throw topwaters, plastics and spoons year-around. Check out corpusfishing.com. The locals refer to the upper Laguna as the Back Yard. Plenty of reports from the older retired guys who get to cherry pick their days and hit it during the week when boat traffic is at a minimum.

We've worked the edges of the channels on the south side of the JFK causeway with good results.

Got in tonight, hook up to the trailer, take the cover off the boat, then discover some asshat has stolen all four batteries out of the boat.

I seriously hope that guy gets butthole cancer.

Ha i grew up on catcay which is part of topic isles before college. Love the area.

If you're in the bluff you need to hit up Laguna Reef at the end of Laguna shores rd
