How long do you want to ignore this user?
Setting out my 1st one ever. Hogs moved in after flooding last year and tearing up hay field. Figure I would trap a few for meat. Do's and dont's please.

Cheapest way we've found is to make a figure 6 trap out of cattle panels with a fairly long alley. Place a spring loaded door at the end of the alley leading into the pen. I've seen some folks place a mirror inside the pen at the end of the alley so the hogs charge into the trap. We bait ours for about a week before setting the door so they get accustomed to entering the pen. You better get them all on the first try because they are smart and will stop entering for quite a while after you trap the first few...

Same concept as twelfth but I've always used just a roll of goat fence and t post. Make about a 20 foot circle and overlap it on inside about 3 ft. Prop it open for about a week so hogs get used to where opening is and then let the fence close itself up. Hogs will still know where opening was and can push it open from outside to get in but are unable to open it to get out.

Put it in the shade, check it every 24 hours and provide a water source if you want to eat them.

That's our standard.

How long is a while? My FIL has not trapped a single one in his pen trap in the last year after having initial success. Yes, they are still present in large numbers. Smart little SOB's.

My trap is 10' x 4' angle iron frame, wire panel welded top frame with a spring loaded 2' wide x 4' tall door.
pressure plate for food at very back that releases the door pen when stepped on.

Do you want to get all of the pigs (the whole sounder) or just part of the pig group?

Once we trap pigs, we usually move the trap to a different location. May only move it a couple of hundred yards. We usually catch more within a week or so.

They seem to distinguish the traps more by location than the actual trap itself.

Not entirely true. We had always believed this until in a week we caught hogs in our trap 4 out of 5 days. The first day we had 8 piglets. The second day we had 3 more piglets. The third day the hogs had been in the trap but pried open the gate and got out. We reset the gate and had 4 adult hogs with 6 piglets the fourth day. The fifth day we had 2 more piglets.

Killed the hogs in the trap each day and they kept coming back.

Just post your address and leave the gate unlocked. OB can take care of this.

Do: Kill every hog that gets into the trap

Don't: Let any live

Just buy some rat poison and mix it with corn. Sid says it works like a charm.

Best way to trap hogs: don't.

Get you a couple of friends and some hog dogs. I recommend pits or catahoulas. Then all you need is a trusty rusty knife and some common sense and you'll be knocking 2 birds with 1 stone. Hunting hogs with dogs is not only fun but depletes the rampant population of feral hogs.
